Weekend in Birmingham from Grimsby

Good evening all,

I'm planning on having a trip down to Brum later this month, travelling down on Fri 19th from Grimsby Town to Birmingham (staying either near New Street or Snow Hill, spending Saturday at the NEC (although hopefully getting a bus/tram/train to a parkrun first) and returning home on Sunday.

I want to have flexibility of times on the long distance train parts, either to travel from Grimsby via EMR to Nottingham or TPE to Sheffield. I've discovered that the cheapest way to do this is to split at Derby, so I was planning on getting a pair of off-peak returns, one Grimsby-Derby, and one Derby to New Street.

However, I suppose I theory that my train journey is actually Grimsby - Birmingham International. Would there be a ticket combination that would allow me to break journey at New Street and resume the following day to International? I'd guess that Derby-Birmingham International would meet this criteria, but I'd probably have a fight on my hands about the overnight break of journey?

Or is there some kind of PTE ticket that might help? I don't go to Brum much, so I don't know what combined local tickets I might be able to use.

And to be fair, if I'm only going to save a couple of quid, then I might just stick with my original plan.

There is a PTE ticket available that covers the entire West Midlands county for £7.80 a day that entitles you to off-peak bus, tram and train travel.

There is are cheaper bus only rover tickets (Brum-NEC is about 40 mins via X1), and there is a slightly more expensive PTE ticket enabling train travel a little beyond WM into neighbouring Worcestershire, Staffordshire and Warwickshire.

Does the X1 run via the Swan Centre. There's a parkrun there which I quite fancy doing, I could do that en route to the NEC...

So it looks to me like there's virtually no difference in price between the ticket with the trains and the one without?

I can do buses to Swan Centre, then onward to NEC, then come back to New Street and even get a transfer to the Jewellery Quarter if I stick with that particular hotel.

That looks promising. Would I be able to get this on a bus or at a tram stop, or do I need an ITSO card?

Easy to get on the bus though it's issued as a paper bus-style ticket so isn't able to go through any train barriers and you'll need to be waved through.

I think it's also supposed to be able to be issued on ITSO but the one time I tried to load it onto my TfWM-issued smartcard, it wouldn't accept it so I'm not sure how easy it is to do.
