Hello,
I was travelling to London today as a part of family group (4 adults)
We used the tram in Croydon and tapped in/out. Then we thought our Ticket already covers the tram, so in the way back we didn't tap in before entering the tram. We got stopped by the inspector in the tram, we showed him the ticket and he said its not valid on the tram. Then we told him we already tapped in, he scanned our phone wallet for validation and let us go.
So i don't know what will happen now? We didn't tap in before the last journey as we thought its included in the ticket we bought. Can someone with similar experience tell us what will happen? Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum.

What type of ticket/card did you use to touch in when you were inspected in the tram. Was it a contactless card or an Oyster card? If it was Oyster is it registered or does it contain a pass eg Freedom, Zip, Season ticket or Staff?

Did the inspector take any contact details from you or give you any paperwork?

You say that you tapped in/out on the tram on the outward journey, but when using trams there is no need to tap out (unless you are leaving the tram at Wimbledon).

As Hadders said, we do need to know exactly what type of ticket you were using in order to offer the correct advice.

It was a contactless bank card using google pay on the phone.
The inspector didn't take any contact details or given us any forms.
Thanks in advance

You won’t hear anything more about this but you will get a higher than normal charge on your bank card for failing the revenue inspection.

If you fail another revenue inspection then your card is likely to be blocked, preventing it from being used to pay for travel on the TfL network.

Oh i didn't know about that. I tapped in a station and took the tram for 3 stations. Then exited the tram and tapped out in one of the machines on the terminal. Then entered a mall for an hour. And took the tram again back to the first station, while my trip back i got the inspection.

What was the 'wrong ticket on TfL' that was bought?
I bought a group travel ticket thinking its a day travel card.

Although it is only necessary to tap on to the tram, further taps within the 60 (actually 62) minutes after the first one don't attract an additional charge, because of the hopper fare set up. The only place you tap off a tram is if leaving Wimbledon station when the main station barriers are shut.

How much is the higher charge in this instance?

I believe it's a maximum fare, rather than a Penalty Fare. I believe it's upto £9.40 but not sure if this is different if a tram is involved.

Others will be able to advise if it is worth phoning the TfL helpline to get the charges corrected but it is best you wait for the charges to appear on your bank statement first.

Can you be *precise* about the group ticket - what it was and how much you paid for it and where you bought it - website? ticket office? You showed it - perhaps you could upload a picture of it?

What happened to the rest of your party? Did they each have their own individual phone wallets to tap and did the inspector check them all too?

The OP says they used contactless on their Google Wallet although it's not clear if this applied to everyone.

I wouldn't call TfL, if the OP didn't touch in and then failed a revenue inspection then a maximum fare is the appropriate charge. Calling them to say you didn't touch in could be seen as an admission of travelling with no ticket.

I'm still mystified by the "group ticket". Presumably it was a ticket from somewhere else to Croydon?

From what has been said I believe that no further action will be taken and no further charge made.

My understanding is that after touching a tram validator you are valid for 60 minutes. As long as the inspector checked the card within 60 minutes of the touch our then you'll be fine. Check your journey history to confirm what has happened. If your bank card isn't registered on the TfL system then you can still see journey history once you register, or there is an option to view history without registering.

There’s one of two possibilities:
  1. The inspection was within 62 minutes of the last touch-in on the tram – there are no touch-outs for trams with the exception of Wimbledon – in this case there will be no further charge
  2. The inspection was later than this – in this case there will be a failed inspection fee charged to each card, and if this has happened before, the card will be blocked from further usage in the TfL contactless area until the cardholder phones up and explains themselves.
It is still quite unclear what “group ticket” was held and whether it was valid, but the OP does not seem to want to clarify this and until they do I can’t add to the above.

I hate to disagree but I think the chances of anyone caring would be about zero.

This FOI to TFL states
We recognise that for most customers any incomplete journey is likely to be accidental. More often than not, this is simply due to human error; forgetting to touch in or out as they travel around.

Customers can also ask us, at any time, to fix an incomplete journey for them. Customers can fix up to three incomplete journeys a month via their online account. We’ve made this as simple as we can and feedback from customers on this has been positive. Alternatively, they can call Customer Services and staff will fix any incomplete journeys for them.

Can @MikeWh or anyone else confirm what someone who failed a contactless revenue inspection on a tram would be charged?
