It's pretty nifty, but I'd still trust it less than looking at the timetable for the scheduled arrival at your destination and setting an alarm for five minutes earlier.

Alas I know through experience that this isn't true !

It's a nice idea but couldn't see it working as well as an alarm although I would want 15 minutes grace to be on the safe side.

Although it might be a good idea on the iPhone since it has a tendency for the alarm to randomly not work

A few years ago a schoolkid got on a service at Southampton Central, dozed off and woke up when the train was pulling into Cardiff Central!

If I'm traveling on my own and need to get some shut-eye, I'll set the alarm on my phone so that it goes off 5 minutes before the train arrives at my destination.

Seems sensible...but, if i set an alarm I find I cannot get to sleep until it goes off, then i tend to fall deeply asleep

Spelling? A person could have a field day. Your for you're is a favourite as well as the ever popular teh rather than the.

Technically that would be a grammar mistake since "your" and "you're" are still correctly spelt...

The solution is to use a web browser like Chrome, which checks your spelling for you. Don't use Safari to check your spelling, as it runs on the American dictionary!

Isn't possible for me though. I once did a 30 minute Pacer journey at around 8pm after getting no sleep the night before and I had no problems staying awake. If anything I had more difficulty staying awake sitting on a hard platform bench.

I never know what to do if I see people asleep on trains. I never wake them up, but there's always your conscience nagging you!

Saw a man fast asleep on a Buxton to Blackpool North service earlier this week, his stop was Heaton Chapel (his ticket was on the seat next to him) and I got off at Stockport, given the 4 minutes between SPT and HTC I have no idea if he made it off!

I had a two hour sleep on an empty stock 142 once back from York. Just depends if it's one with Northern Spirit seats, Merseyrail seats or FNW bench seats. Think you also have to be under 5'7 too

I've done it loads of times, worst two were missing Piccadilly on a Saturday evening and waking up in Chapel en Le Frith (required and emergency rescue from a friend with a car - otherwise I was there for 2 hours) and missing Stalybridge on a TPE from Leeds and going right through to Liverpool.

When travelling with Amtrak in the states, some services put a card above your seat so someone wakes you up, just as well as it was one service per day in each direction with as much as 2/3 hours between stops.

I don't know about that you know. I quite often find myself drifting off on a long run between stations with a draught blowing on to me from an open window, no matter what the noise and racket. Never fear though because I'm nearly always woken up by some kind of violent side movement when it goes over point work

I can confirm it is impossible, have tried it on the way back from watching an abysmal Tranmere game, all the way from Birkenhead to Ainsdale having stayed up all Friday night and still not possible.

Presumably if it went off someone would nudge you, if not to shout 'TURN YOUR BLOODY PHONE OFF!'

The one that gets me is "lead" instead of "led". I don't think that a spell checker will pick it up in view of the metal lead. Also, "of" instead of " 've".

I bet it was! I won't let myself fall asleep on my train. It goes to my station directly from London, then to King's Lynn, so if I fall asleep, it'll be a fair trek back home!
