DB "busy train" predictions- how reliable?

I travel in Germany fairly frequently, often using long distance trains. When I book online I have to decide whether to pay for a reserved seat. DB Navigator has a feature which predicts how busy the service is. I'd like to rely on that as a guide whether to reserve. However when I last travelled between Dresden and Berlin, the prediction was "really busy". The reality was "almost empty coach". I've had the same problem before. Is there any way to second guess the reality better than DB does?

I tend to have a look at the actual occupancy on the seat maps and then, if I want, book my 1st class seats free of charge on ÖBB...

Where do I find seat maps? And can I reserve a 2nd class seat gratis via ÖBB?
Seat maps are on DB with a link "Select seat". Optional reservations via ÖBB are only free of charge in 1st class. And for some trains they don't work, or don't work from/to outside Germany. On e.g. Amsterdam-Berlin it doesn't work at all, on Brussels-Frankfurt only within Germany, from Basel SBB to Germany it doesn't work but it works from Basel Bad Bf.

Thanks, I've found the seat selector. I'm not sure why I didn't see that before. I see there's the usual Probe Bahncard 25 offer. I am currently planning to travel on 3/4 January. As there's always a danger of me having to cancel my trip before then, I'm reluctant to commit to the Bahncard before January. Do you know if the offer goes beyond the end of December?

Looking at the DB conditions of carriage, it looks like the Probe-BahnCard is not a temporary offer anymore but a permanent one.
