Is this a national thing or just local?

In Manchester it's the more specific/traditional Merry Christmas, Transdev in Lancashire have Merry Christmas message also.

Misspelt on the buses? Not the first time a spelling mistake has occured on a blind.

Stagecoach East Midlands have "Merry Christmas" that alternates with the 'not in service' blind, accompanied by pictures of snowflakes/trees/presents and other Christmas related things. On buses from Lincoln, Grimsby and Gainsborough depots I noticed each Christmas blind was different, which suggests each depot has a unique one.

A Lincoln bus had "Merry Christmas from all at Stagecoach" with a present and a candy cane
A Grimsby bus had "Merry Christmas" with a tree and presents surrounded by snowflakes
A Gainsborough bus was switching between "Merry Christmas" and "Santa Claus is comin' to town" with trees and a sleigh surrounded by snowflakes

They are all spelt correctly, it's misspelt ones that are interesting, e.g. Saeson Greeting. I assume you didn't notice that.

Only on a registered bus route (same as final destination). So such messages are fine on an out of service vehicle.

I've seen a few "Merry Christmas from Arriva" buses - hopefully it is just on out of service vehicles as having unnecessary information or information changing quickly on the destination blind is a nightmare for partially sighted people.

Arriva Derby has scrolling screen with the route/destination and 'Merry Christmas'.

Instead of screens trentbarton has employed Santa to drive the sixes today. Presumably to help with the 'driver shortages!'

I've seen a few "Merry Christmas from Arriva" buses - hopefully it is just on out of service vehicles as having unnecessary information or information changing quickly on the destination blind is a nightmare for partially sighted people.

Arriva Wales has their blinds programmed so it's a kind of 'info' screen when in service. I nearly missed a bus the other day because there was no route number or anything for a good 5-10 seconds, just the Merry Christmas blind, then just the bus was about to drive past, it changed to say '12 Llandudno', I had to quickly put my arm out to stop the bus (Lots of different buses use the stop)

We have a Stagecoach East Midlands bus based at Mansfield dressed up as " Santa's Grotto" in service. Today it's been going round the local area inviting children to visit Santa.

Almost missed a bus the other day as the destination only showed Merry Christmas. I only knew it was mine thanks to Bustimes. Absolutely ridiculous and not bah humbug all. At least leave the number showing.

I’m sure drivers would appreciate this too. A couple of times now I’ve had to flag down a bus showing a Christmas message (or events like the Jubilee) because the message has been displayed for the whole time the bus has been visible, only to flip to the destination as the bus is pulling up and I then have to apologise to the driver as it’s not my bus but I had no way of knowing!

If you’re quoting something with an error is best to hightlight that otherwise most people will assume it’s your error; the traditional way to do that it ‘(sic)’ immediately after the error (it’s from Latin for something like ‘this it was written’), I’m not sure if there’s a modern way which keeps the plain English police happy…

There's no excuse for the number not being permanently visible.

I'd flag them down anyway and ask the driver what number it is. Being partially sighted I have occasionally had to do this if I can't see the destination
