l caught this service today and it was formed of 2 three car turbo and one 2 car turbo. The back turbo was locked out. Can anyone tell me why was this ? Plus is this a record for this route

The rear turbo was just 'hitching a lift'. The platforms on the route aren't long enough for an eight-coach train, and with no access between units, the rear unit can't be used by passengers.

166204 went forward on its own from Bristol.

The extra units appear to have been there because the 0721 from Portsmouth was cancelled and the units needed to get to Bristol without running an empty service.

Your train was 1F16, back and middle unit only went to Bristol, although were clearly then in the way for a reversal as train then lost 31 minutes at Bristol

1F08 was cancelled to Bristol
1F10 was 3car 166
1F12 was 2car 158
1F14 was 2car 158

the following train 1F18 was also 2car, then 1F20 was 3car, 1F22 was 2car

Basically can't couple 158 and 165 so couldn't even out the train lengths, although could have coupled 2 158s then had 3car before 1F16

Running multiple 2car trains then an 8car, which is partly locked out suggests someone lost the plot

Clearly it is speculation, but if the units had failed at Portsmouth, it is possible that a fitter had to travel there to get them running again, so the first train they could be attached to was the later one.
