I like Class 357s, there very handsome units indeed. One of the things that diffrent from what I've heard is Class 170s have a longer body (23m) whilst 357s are a bit shorter. Correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

Electrostars have shorter bodies than Turbostars, IIRC it's approx. 20m and 23m respectively.

This is indeed the case- and the Turbos are narrower than the Electros (2.7m versus 2.8m, approx). Almost all units in this country (except Pacers and class 165/166) are either 20m x 2.8m or 23m x 2.7m (approx)

Beauty:
1) Heywood D40 4-4-0.
2) Gresley P2 (2001 original form) 2-8-2.
3) I'd add my vote for the Westerns - the best-looking diesel ever.

Beast:
1) Chinese QJ 2-10-2.
2) Russian P36 4-8-4.
3) GM EMD SD90MAC.

Seconded. Amazing looking trains. Plus the Intercity livery to me is the best livery we have seen in a long time. That livery, and the swallow sitting proudly on the side.
I quite like that picture as from that angle it really shows the sleek lines of the 91.
I also have to add in 47s, 90s and HSTs. The HST is just iconic, whilst the 47s and 90s are pure cute!! Look at a 47 end on (one of those with the marker lights), and tell me it isnt smiling at you!!!!

Units wise. Its a 156, with a 158 close behind. Another two cute looking trains!!

If you want to refer to a train smiling at you, you ought to consider the Class 365s,

Series 500 Shinkansen ^.^ not the most successful design due to it's high costs!

They've been replaced on top line services by the N700 which isn't as good looking (still better then the 700 series)

I like most British steam locomotives, but find there's something lacking in images of them, you have to be there I think. Anyway, I can't choose between them, alot of them are good.

My favorite modern trains, in no particular order:

• ICE-1 / ICE-2 (I DO NOT like the multiple unit ICEs (ICE-3 onwards))
• Eurostar (both in Eurostar livery and GNER's earlier scheme, but not the one with red doors)
• INTERCITY 225 in INTERCITY Swallow (and early GNER livery as with Eurostars)
• INTERCITY 125 in original blue&grey and in Swallow - some TOC liveries (esp. Great Western Trains) also come close

Runners up (remembering this is looks wise, not necessarily meaning they are my favorites to travel on), again not in order:

• Voyagers (XC's would look better if they made the door colour match the ends of the unit instead of being pink)
• Locos classes 37, 47, some 57, 60, undecided on 86 or 87, 90 (though because both ends are streamlined they look a bit odd if veiwed from certain angles when attached to a passenger train), (91 already on the list above) and 92
• Mark 3 stock, including with a DVT (depending on livery) (seriously considering moving this to the other list)
• Class 222 (only in EMT livery)
• Class 158/159 in Wales&West Alphaline livery (particularly the version which was basicly Regional Railways, and the blue and silver one would have looked better without the yellow triangles) and the original (ie. red doors not orange) SWT livery. Some other liveries (eg. Scotrail's latest) are good too.
• Freshwater the Blue & Grey 3-CIG
• 377s (though that's based on some fictious liveries I applied to them in photoshop, I don't think there's a real one in a perfect livery)
• 5-WES in the early version of SWT
• These dutch double decker things

I'll probablly think of some more that should be on these lists later.

Beautiful, beautiful engines...to say nothing of the breathtaking livery - whenever I visit the NRM I spend a good few minutes just taking in the details of the colour scheme - from the gorgeous lettering to the intricate detail on the axleboxes...

Best: 1st: 323 in London Midland colours
2nd:222 in East Mids Colours
3rd: (and i know im probably completely alone in this) 142s in North West Trains Gold Star livery (although the FGW Dynamic lines is also good)

Worst: 3rd: 221 in VT livery, i find them boring, and since, from my point of view, boring is ugly...
2nd: 357s in White livery for same reason as 221
1st: 067s, they seem really misshapen to me

LOL, not completely alone! I quite like the 142's, they have a kind of functional tidyness to them, a bit like a Class 60!

Smartest EMU in the UK (I know nothing about foriegn metal!) would surely have to be the Class 332/333 sets, genuinely stlyish trains and lightyears ahead in visual terms of the awful-looking Desiro efforts. Best DMU would be a 158/159 in SWT's excellent livery, and for 'big trains' I'd go for an FGW or GNER HST.

Absolutely the worst without any doubt would have to be those terrible Class 70's, what on earth were they thinking....??!! :cry:

I know how bored you feel as I was cut off in North Kent with just EPBs to travel on.

More 'personality' in an Electrostar than a bloody Desiro tho! At least a 'Star sounds a bit like a proper whiney electric (sort of!)

I'm quite a fan of Japanese trains. They're not all good looking (some of them are positively ugly), but there seems to be a bit more emphasis on "form" there- though not at the expense of "function"- especially with non-Shinkansen longer distance trains.

I like the 'Electrostars' and I like the 'Slamdoors to (Networkers being my personal favorite)

The 'Slammers were brilliant units, I liked them very much and miss them. But the 'Electrostars' are a vast improvent over them. These enthusiasts who have a 'unrealistic' view of the railway and think anything old is better and the railway 'revolves' around them really get on my nerves. (Not aimed at you at all)

I also bet ANY money that once the Class 375s have been replaced you'll be saying how great they were too, classic enthusiast!

Yeah, they are not my favorite units, but they have started to grow on me the last few years, however I have always had a soft spot for the prototypes and the class 141....oh and I kinda like the style because I like the Leyland National!

Horrible things to travel on though!
