Looking for a piece of advice please.

A relative is travelling from Glasgow to Tilbury, which means crossing London. He can’t walk terribly far and will have luggage. His plan is walk the short distance from Euston to Euston Square, then catch the Hammersmith & City line to West Ham and change there onto LT&S to avoid the walk from Tower Gateway to Fenchurch Street.

My question is whether this is a reasonable route either for a via London ticket or ”U1” to Tilbury (as part of a split ticket). Given both H&C and LT&S are within the same gate line I can‘t see a technical reason why it couldn’t be done, just whether it is valid.

If that isn’t Permitted (as it seems a perfectly sensible solution), what happens with assisted travel across London?
Thanks

The walk at Euston is similar in length (but I find a lot more hustle & bustle, but that may depend on day/time of travel) to that at Fenchurch St, and may in fact be longer, though this may depend on whether Cooper's Row entrance is open (which, again, may depend on day/time of travel).

Yes, U1 to Tilbury is absolutely valid to change at West Ham.

I do appreciate that there is a walk from Euston to Euston Square, however Tower Gateway to Fenchurch Street would be either another walk on top of Euston or require a change of tube train (using say Northern line from Euston)

It might be a little easier to stay on Hammersmith & City as far as Barking, for a cross platform interchange onto a C2C train to Tilbury.

Yes it can be cross-platform at Barking, however without knowing the intended itinerary, we cannot say for sure.

There's no avoiding some walking; as for which walks are the least bad options, it depends on whether the aim is to avoid escalators, make use of lifts etc, or - if it's raining - to avoid getting wet!

I believe there are lifts at Euston Square, if you cross the busy Euston Road, so do allow extra time for that; if the aim is to minimise stairs/escalators and if a fair walk at street level is fine, then that is the best option, changing again at Barking.

(Going via King's Cross could reduce the walking distance, but again introduces a change at Edinburgh, and also additional journey time; furthermore if the journey originates at Central then any walking saving in London is completely negated by additional walking in Glasgow... or an even slower journey via Carstairs or Shotts)

If walking a distance is a problem, but escalators are not then there are other variations

eg Northern line to Bank, Central to Mile End, cross platform to District for West Ham or Barking.

Bank rebuild is now complete so changing trains is fully accessible

Is this journey for a cruise from Tilbury ?

I'd suggest Northern Line from Euston to Bank, then DLR to Limehouse to change to c2c. Fairly short walks at every stage, and escalators or lifts wherever there are stairs.

Is he able to use buses?
If so I'd suggest getting the 205 bus from outside Euston Station (Stop D) towards Bow to Pitman St (stop M), then 135 bus towards Crossharbour from the same stop to Limehouse Station (stop LB) there is a lift to platform 2 (for Tilbury) both are fairly high frequency services. The longest walk would be from the train to the concourse at Euston. Use a contactless bank card on the buses.

I wouldn’t recommend a change at Bank to my worst enemy 8-)

Northern to DLR is really easy at Bank. Some of the others are best avoided.

We don't know the time of day and there isn't really enough information regarding any mobility issues to say which route may be 'best'.

I think there would be a less walking to change at Euston/Bank/Limehouse, than to walk between Euston & Euston Square (as standing on an escalator or in a lift doesn't count as walking), however if crowds are best avoided, then if Bank would be encountered on a weekday evening peak, then I'd be ruling that out.

If walking any significant distance with luggage is the issue, and time isn't, I'd also go for the 205 from immediately in front of Euston station, in the nearest bus bay.

Just to warn that to cross the road at Limehouse via a traffic light controlled crossing involves a long walk from the bus stop and back to the station. There is an island in the middle of the road adjacent to the bus stop, but it involves crossing three lanes in one direction and two in the other.

Or even just bite the bullet and get a black cab from Euston to Fenchurch Street.

Minimal walking?

How about changing at Manchester Oxford Rd, Peterborough and Blackfriars, tube to West Ham/Barking/Upminster and train to Tilbury. Same platform at Manchester Oxford Rd (and far pleasanter than P13/14 at Manchester Piccadilly), over a footbridge (with lifts) at Peterborough, sit towards the rear of the train for an easier interchange down to the District Line at Blackfriars.

Depends if the less-mobile relative wants to spend several extra hours travelling :)
