Thought I would share since not many Optare Excels with Mercedes Benz engines are still around. Here are some photos of preserved 2002 Mercedes Benz Optare Excel 2, FD02SFN, ex Nottingham City Transport and Go Goodwin WSV 541/550/551 chassis LL1180 with Allison gearbox.

Very nice! What livery are you planning on putting it in?

I remember the old Trentbarton ones, do you know if any of them are preserved?

I'm not sure if any Trent Barton ones are preserved. I'd suggest checking on Google or Facebook. My one is going back into NCT livery (dark green) as soon as possible Once CCTV etc.is finally fitted not much needs doing.

That looks really nice and the green is an excellent choice. What are your plans with it once it is recommissioned?

As soon as I saw the funny little ‘sorry! I’m not in service’ blind I knew it had to be a former Nottingham example.

This really takes me back, please do keep us updated :)

Good luck with your journey, only driven one Excel during my time with Edwards Coaches when I first started out - ex Cardiff via Reading but returned back to Wales in 2010. Cummins, slow to get going but was fantastic once it was wound up;

As a passenger i used to love these buses, they were almost futuristic
It's great - very comfortable, especially for being 21 years old and still going strong.

I love the first version of them but prefer them second version, only as big massive Mercedes Benz fan. There's only 1 alive from Nottingham City Transport/ex Go Goodwin's, Manchester.

Thanks for the updates, always had a soft spot for Excels. Made a nice change from the ALX300s and early Wright Eclipses on my local EYMS single deck route.

I can't think of any preserved Trentbarton Excels.. Wonder if the one that used to run round Gateshead (A Line?) is still going?
