Greetings all.

First off, apologies if this is posted in the wrong place.

We're due to spend 5 nights in Glasgow starting this coming weekend. We're booked on Sunday's 10.12 Transpennine service from Liverpool Lime Street. I know that the action short of strike will affect some services but does anyone know if Sunday's direct service to Glasgow is one that relies on rest day working as it's only a twice daily route? We've already decided to cut our stay short by one night and try to return the day before the actual strike day on Friday.

Apologies in advance if this is a stupid question.

Thanks in advance. Tom

According to Onetimetrains, it has run 100% of the time over the past 12 weeks but has only been on time 45% of those 12 Sundays.

As far as I know the only alternative with the advance tickets that we've got is another Transpennine service. The next direct service is 8 hours later. We could (probably would) get one to Manchester and change there.

You could change at Preston - likely much quicker. The final sprint would be on Northern but I can't see that being issue, especially on a Sunday!

ISTR Northern to Preston are decidedly unpredictable on a Sunday?

I didn't know that Northern went as far as Glasgow. We have advance tickets though so (as I understand it) we still need to travel on Transpennine on an action short of strike days?

Northern do not go as far as Glasgow, I believe @cle was referring to using one of the few TPE Glasgow-Manchester Airport as far as Preston and then using Northern.

Although for that you would need rerouting by a TPE staff member, otherwise, as observed, you have to stick to TPE services.

That sounds like a reverse journey. We're going up to Glasgow.
When would they know if our service needs to be cancelled? The night before or maybe 8am ish for a 10.12 departure?

Thanks for your continued assistance Tom

Yes, I noticed the incorrect direction (Although it might be useful on your return?), but the same theory applies in either direction.

Either some time before 10pm the day before if they want to p-code it.
But in theory it could be cancelled at any time.
I don't see TPE having cancellations put in yet for the overtime ban, so either they're hopeful or well resourced.

So anytime up to departure but potentially as early as the previous evening?
We're originally due to return on the strike day, we could take a chance on the Avanti service but I'd imagine they will be extremely busy. I think our best plan is to aim for the 12.04 Transpennine direct service on the Thursday. Hopefully it shouldn't be too busy as Avanti will still be running.

As long as the service isn't cancelled we'll be happy, even if it does have a bit of a delay

Have you got a booked ticket already? If so, if your train is cancelled then the staff at Liverpool Lime Streer will provide you with an alternative, which will involve the next and quickest service over the same route. Your ticket will be honoured either way, so any stress or hassle for you should be minimised.

Yep, we booked advanced tickets around 6 weeks ago. Going via Manchester is an option but I hate platforms 13/14 there. However, if our service is cancelled then that'll probably be our only option with our tickets being "Ap Tpe Only". I would imagine that would rule out using Northern to get to either Wigan Northwestern or Preston to connect with a Transpennine to Glasgow?

Cheers Tom

Just had an additional thought.

During a period of strikes/no overtime working, do the train companies maintain seat reservations or void them with the service probably being full to the brim?

Depends on what itinerary you'd be given by the staff. TPE haven't cancelled any trains tomorrow yet. Hopefully your train isn't cancelled.

I think reservations will probably be maintained, however it looks like it might be very busy (especially Preston-Oxenholme apparently) as standard class tickets don't seem to be avaliable anymore for that train. If you can get to Lime Street earlier, the train is due to arrive from Preston at 9:43.

There have been a few that have terminated at Preston due to a "fault on the train". I've found the journey checker that lists all cancellations and service amendments, very handy indeed

Surely if a train you are booked on is cancelled the operator is obliged to find you a reasonable suitable alternative, whether that is with the same operator or not. Six hours later is not "reasonable"

Where did you get 6 hours from? The next direct train is just under an 8 hour delay.
TPE only via Manc is just over 1 hour extra delay, as would Northern to Preston then TPE North and is the fastest backup option (Avanti cancelled)

Well we've arrived safely in Glasgow just a couple of mins late. Job done, now to decide if we risk our return on the Friday strike day or bail a day early for a Thursday departure?

Hi, just to point out that if your train was cancelled the staff would still usually find you the next quickest service no matter what your ticket says. You wouldn’t be forced to stay on TPE services if one of theirs was cancelled. Usually the train operators have to arrange ticket acceptance between each other, but it is a pretty rare occurrence for that not to happen.

Assuming you aim to travel on the direct 12:04 from Glasgow to Liverpool, it's already cancelled. TPE are running nothing on Friday.
Your choices are to either go on Thursday, or go the long way round (via Crewe) on Friday, which takes about 20-40 minutes more.

Since you'd be stranded in Glasgow because the train isn't running, I think you'd be allowed to take the route without needing permission.

Another thing to consider is the fact that the Crewe route (Avanti) on Friday will be full. When we arrived at Glasgow, the queue for the return Liverpool service was massive, not all hoping to go to Liverpool though. It was listed on journeycheck as standing room only out of Glasgow. So Thursday will be our best option, at least there would be the possibility of both operators running.

Would travel from Glasgow Central to Liverpool Stns on this coming Friday also be possible by changing at Warrington BQ and then Chester?

That is a possibility. TFW aren't in dispute so are running normally. We do actually have that route on our backup list. We live on the Wirral so a connection to the Merseyrail network (also not in dispute) via Chester is workable. Not done the math on the connection timings yet
