South Wales 'Metro' updates

I'll take your word for it!

Personally, I think it's a pity if the Metro brand isn't used as widely as possible - if only to show that it really is a South Wales Metro, not a Cardiff one. It also pressures TfW to include lines like the Vale, Llynfi and Ebbw in the list of lines where 4tph is at least an aspiration.
Tbf Vale will have metro branded trains and 4tph to Penarth and Barry. Ebbw is getting 2tph and there's an aspiration to run another 2 to Abertillery. Maesteg only gets 1 (there's long term plans for 2) so it's the Maesteg - Cheltenham that really gets the short straw.

I wouldn't be surprised to see metro branding on Ebbw line in the not to distant future.

Wander up the stairs at platform 8 you will see the whole wall is branded as Metro. It so at the moment the stations that TfW run or have a big stake in. A lot of stations in Wales are still Network Rail controlled so they probably won't get rebranded.

From this photo above the split from the treherbert and Merthyr lines at Pontypridd, am I right, from looking at it, that the green block to the right of the Merthyr line, on the tram road, is an electric substation, and then the white pipes leading up to the gantry are electric lines? If so, which of the two lines does it power, or is it both?

What a mess ! The state of those trunking runs my goodness.

That's basically the railway term for one of those substations. It isn't fed from a grid substation (that would be a Feeder Station), but it allows for remote isolations on large sections of line, controlled from the Electrical Control Room (in this case, Taff's Well).
And it's normal for them to be at junctions so they can close one route to enable works on the track, while keeping the other route open for electric trains.

I believe it's just the Core Valleys, City/Coryton Line and Bay.

The 231s which will eventually end up on the Maesteg and Ebbw Vale line for explain don't have the word Metro on them, but the 756s (Rhymney, Penarth and Coryton) do.

Metro includes Maesteg and Ebbw Vale, and as far east as Abergavenny and Severn Tunnel Junction – there’s a map on the on TfW Metro site.

I thought the branding wasn’t on the 231s because they would also be going to Cheltenham Spa.

Chepstow and Caldicot not considered 'Metro' either, whereas Severn Tunnel Junction is, despite them all being served by the same (cross-border) services.

Would that be because they are on the Cheltenham route and therefore not on a Metro line as such?

Maesteg shouldn't be branded as Metro if it's only going to have 1tph. Whoever heard of a 1tph Metro frequency?

Yeah exactly why I don't think it will be. Perhaps if they ever extend it and/or get it to 4tph then they will. The map above is more an aspirational boundary.

The first masts for the OLE are up on the Coryton line.
It really irks me to see those masts in such a position that it can never be double tracked properly.

But it's nice to see progress being made.

Epping to Ongar was peak times only before it closed

Maesteg is still under control of Network Rail so any changes to that line won't be short term. It needs a passing loop somewhere to increase frequency.

Many S Bahn routes are half-hourly at their extremities. That would be a reasonable aspiration.

I noticed earlier this year that at Birchgrove the cable trunking is on posts planted in the middle of where a second track would go. Cannot even get access down the line with a van now. I cannot fathom the logic (possibly none).

Agree, however until Network Rail install a passing loop somewhere then it's not going to happen.
I think that the case for funding would be better if the passengers actually paid for their tickets.

Mind you, Ebbw Vale is getting investment and those passengers are at least equal in reputation.

Agree on both counts. Would it be so much more difficult to place them somewhere which could allow for future doubling?
Yes, when we went on a rover as far as Maesteg I did feel I would not be exposing my Granddaugher to that kind of experience again. Penarth is a far nicer place !.

The improvement is to extend the Newport-Crosskeys service to Ebbw Vale. Few passengers travelled to/from Newport, let alone bought tickets. Maybe there's a big untapped market further up the valley though?

Why? Because Maesteg is poor? Not a snarky question.
There was quite a lot of bad behaviour, bad language and open discussion of fare dodging. Did not expect that so far from Croydon !.

I have no idea if Maesteg is a poor area - but if they were all well off then they might well be in a car so its a careful what you wish for type thing (as in no railway needed).

Let's just say the ticket machines at Garth, Sarn and Wildmill have apparently been away for repairs for some time now. Last time I was in Maesteg it appeared to be a cash only town.

Maesteg is a pretty sad place. You can see from its wonderful Market Hall and the empty redundant chapels how amazing it used to be. Sadly, no more.

A service that stops short of the two busiest stations on the route (Newbridge and Ebbw Vale Town) and was frequently cancelled anyway is hardly going to see lots of patrons. It'll be different once it's had a fair trial.

Many of the guards dread the Maesteg runs during school finishing times as the local students have become well known for causing absolute havoc on the train, often the BTP make an appearance

Newbridge is within the Newport built-up area and supports a frequent bus service to the city, Ebbw Vale isn't and doesn't so it will be interesting to see what happens. I think the service will be most useful for passengers changing at Newport for destinations further east and north. TfW must avoid making it the first one to be cancelled every time they're short of trains or crew though.
