Train terminated at Birkenhead Central

I was on the 1359 Hooton to Liverpool yesterday when it was held at Port Sunlight due to a serious medical emergency delaying the train in front which was halted at Bebington.

Not wanting to risk missing the kick off at Goodison by hanging about, I caught a train back to Hooton to pick up my car and fortunately discovered one of the few car parks anywhere near the ground (i.e. almost a mile away).

I subsequently discovered that my train had left Port Sunlight 24 minutes late but was terminated at Birkenhead Central, picking up its return path at Rock Ferry 11 minutes down. So where did it reverse and cross to the up line? Were any rare cross overs done in passenger service?

Theres a cross over before Birkenhead Central where the service turned back towards Hooton.
Used daily for empty stock movements and often used during disruption and engineering work to turn trains back.

(Its the up line towards Birkenhead and the down line towards Hooton)

My train this morning (2C03) was turned back at BKC due to late running, often happens in times of disruption.
