Hi all,

I'm in an interesting situation on Monday. I have an open ticket from Derby to Preston. The ticket I have involves a seat reservation, I'd change at Tamworth and Crewe. (16:39-18:51)

I'm not sure when I'll be leaving Derby hence the open ticket, what other routes are valid? I would be keen to break my journey along the route and visit somewhere new for an hour but understand if that is not possible.

Please feel free to move if this is better placed elsewhere, I hope this is the right place though!

Without checking, Derby-Crewe-Preston is obviously correct, Derby-Sheffield-Manchester-Preston (via Wigan x3 or Chorley) seems pretty obvious.

You can check the latter by seeing if a journey planner will offer "via Sheffield" on one ticket. Via Birmingham might also be worth checking out - other members may be able to give a complete list of options.

Absolutely - my outbound involves changes at Oxford Road, Piccadilly, Sheffield and Derby. The only one that's available Sunday morning!

Via Birmingham also makes sense. Appreciate it

The usual ones I’ve done are (1) via Crewe, (2) via Tamworth, (3) via Sheffield / Manchester, and (4) via Leeds. Others might be able to suggest further alternatives. BOJ on an open single should be possible anywhere in the routes during a single day of travel.

NRE likes Leeds/Burnley but not Leeds/Manchester.

Maps at https://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps
  • EM + CU Derby-Stoke-Crewe/Manchester-Preston
  • EM + KM
  • KN Tamworth
  • PR MML via Sheffield & Manchester
  • PR + KW
I don't see Leeds here, but I've not done a rigorous analysis, eg shortest routes etc.

Via Birmingham is not a valid route, though.
