"Department of" re-purposing of originally earnest undertakings, for much less earnest uses: there is in Hendon a "small gothic complex" which was initiated in 1893 as a "Rescue home for Fallen Women", with a chapel attached. Later "morphed" into the St. Saviour's Homes for "feeble-minded" women; was taken over in 1926 by the Pillar of Fire Society as a bible college, school and chapel. It has been redeveloped as "The Pillar" boutique hotel and function suites. In Newport, Isle of Wight: by a comparable process, the town's former Congregational Church was made over into a nightclub, appropriately called "Temptations"; then entered into its current incarnation, a Wetherspoons pub named The Man In The Moon.

Location
West Yorkshire/Tuscany
Llanwrtyd Wells is the location for the World Bog Snorkelling Championships. Mytholmroyd in West Yorkshire is home to the equally eccentric-sounding - but rather more tasty - World Dock Pudding Championship.

Marsh Baldon, Oxfordshire -- some miles south-east of Oxford -- also has a pub called the Seven Stars.

The parish of Sandwick is the largest parish in Orkney. Guernsey's largest parish is that of Castel.

Assuming that Castel is the one to make an association with...not Guernsey.....
In our Channel Islands forays: it seems from past doings, that Guernsey has often been taken and used as association-jumping-off-point; at all events...

Alstonefield in Staffordshire also has a costume museum.
One of my various favourite defaults: Alstonefield is only narrowly within its county; a little bit further east, and it would be in Derbyshire. Kingscourt, Co. Cavan, is in similar case -- it being only just west of the boundary of Co. Meath.

Born in Appley Bridge was the ornithologist, wildlife photographer and climber Jo Moran (1930 -- 2021). A notable part of his work, was researching in the late 1950s, Leach's petrels on the Blasket Islands off the south-west of Ireland. Material concerning his doings re this, is in the museum of the Blasket Centre in Dunquin, Co. Kerry -- at the tip of the Dingle peninsula, and mainland point for access to the islands.

All that I can make out re Cairbre: is its appearing to be the Irish form of the name of the Barony of Carbury, in the north of County Sligo. Within said area, is the seaside settlement of Strandhill, a little way west of Sligo town.

Newquay in Cornwall is also an area where surfing is a popular pastime.

(I momentarily misread, for "surfing", "suffering" -- a town of masochists :s ?)

Newquay has a small, white listed building, the Huer's Hut -- where was posted in times past, the "huer": guy who spotted fish shoals, especially pilchards, out on the water, and alerted the local fishermen for them to get into action. There is a tale concerning Crantock, a short way from Newquay: allegedly in 1835, a funeral was in progress there; when the huer's "shoal sighted" call went up -- the congregation promptly rushed off to their boats, leaving just the parson and the sexton to complete the proceedings.

Uttoxeter has a connection with Dr. Samuel Johnson (1709 -- 1784) -- lexicographer, author, and general "pundit". Johnson was born and grew up in Lichfield, not very far away: his father ran a bookstall at Uttoxeter market. Once, young Samuel refused when asked, to help out at the stall; remorseful later in life over this delinquency, as a penance he stood for a while, hatless in the rain, at the appropriate spot in Uttoxeter. Latish in his life, Johnson spent much time with his friends Heny Thrale, brewer and politician, and Thrale's wife Hester, at their country house at Streatham Park, now in the London Borough of Wandsworth.

The song in the folk / music-hall idiom Day Trip to Bangor ("Didn't we have a lovely time the day we went to ...") -- reckoned to refer to Bangor, Gwynedd, rather than the resort of the same name in Co. Down -- has been rendered in a comically down-beat, glum parody version featuring Blackpool, by Jasper Carrot.
