23/10/86. Class 120 DMU (yes, it's there somewhere) shirts the banks of the Forth towards Burntisland.

09/07/86. 27042 eases into it's final destination of Arbroath with the 16.03 from Glasgow.
A couple of minor points, this one is arriving in Arbroath from the north so it has probably shunted out to run round and now coming back in for the return working.
Burntisland (post 331)) is one word.

All great stuff, thanks again.

Great, thanks for that - it all helps to refine my historical notes and I will edit on here. I always thought Burnt Island was a bit of a strange name - would it therefore be read more as Burntis-land? Any idea of the derivation for this?

Like the luggage trollies at St P. Did any say “not to be removed from Euston”? I’ve a photo of one like that at St Pancras somewhere.

No idea of the derivation but I have heard it pronounced as Burntis-land more than once, just one of many Scottish mispronunciations heard over the years such as Millin-gavie, Gary-lochead (or Gary-lockhead), Ma-laig or Mall-aig, King-gussie, Tin-drum, some understandable as there is no obvious way for a visitor to know how the locals say them, and not just in Scotland with such as Tod-morden, and the multiple pronunciations of such as Slaithwaite coming to mind further south, and that is before we think about Wales!

31/07/85. I keep looking at this one and still can't work it out. Is the driver huge, making the peak look like a half sized model? And even then, why am I - the photographer - seemingly 12 feet tall and yet still tiny compared to the lamp post? Strange lilliputian goings on all round.

Back down into Hampshire.

11/08/85. 33112 is detached from the 4TC unit at Portsmouth Harbour as defective after working in the 09.00 from Reading.

10/08/85. The previous day, a further 33/1 - 33107 is on shunting duties at Southampton. It will detach a mail van from the back of a NE/SW working.

14/08/85. 73130 with the up Channel Island Boat Train (15.00 Weymouth - Waterloo) makes the stop at Southampton. I don't think the driver was about to admonish me for pointing a camera!

Jan '86. You will remember that my recorded notes are quite limited for this visit to Ratcliffe. But the trains were consistently interesting and the photos good. Here is an unidentified 47 with a mixed bag of coaches that I suspect were to/from Derby RTC.

There was a long-running path out from Derby RTC in the mornings and back in the afternoons. Only when required, but it was worth hanging round for to see interesting stuff when I was at Leicester, 1981-83. Including the first class 58 sandwiched between RTC test coaches.
The first vehicle in your photo is a modified “VIX” ferry wagon.More info under HSFV4 at http://www.traintesting.com/HSFV1-6.htm

Looks like I captured an interesting working - fascinating link, thanks for that.

It's far too big a job scanning all of the 1600 photos that I took - and many don't warrant it anyway. So i have been trying to select images from the contact sheet prints I (thankfully) have for each film. The obvious ones were picked out for the first and second passes, but now they are largely gone I am scrutinising ever more closely overlooked images and I have now nearly completed what I think will be my final run through - quite possibly the 7th or 8th! Barrel scrapping maybe, but somehow I am still turning up stuff like this, which in my humble opinion is an absolute banger!

Easter '86. Another visit 'down the cliff' at Folkestone Warren. The well trodden path to the over bridge is cut into the chalk on the left.

02/05/85. Stored at the back of Leicester Depot, awaiting decision on their long term future - 08021 and 08382 are in the process of being consumed by the undergrowth.View attachment 144304
This one brings back memories - I recall walking down a line of shunters in this location a few years after this shot was taken as part of a Midlands shed bash. My recollection may be wrong, but I think there was an 03 there when I visited. The vibe of the photo is just as I remember the depot - deserted and unloved. Very evocative, thank you.

As we are up there already after the last photo, might as well have a little potter around Scotland.

09/07/86. 47561, with a long rake of a/c stock in tow, works the 20.00 Aberdeen - Kings Cross 'Nightrider' through Stonehaven.

10/07/86. A day later and even further north, 37421 stands outside the simple train shed of Wick station, having worked in the late morning service from Inverness.

Mk2 to the front, Mk3 (are they sleepers? Hard to tell) towards the back, and possibly GUV vans (very slab-sided) near the very back.
Not my sharpest of images, but they do look to be sleepers, possibly a mk1 buffet partly hidden by the signal and definitely vans at the back, although I'm not the one to ask about their type.

The first two GUVs appear to be in blue/grey livery. Motorail vans perhaps?
