Only 1 short form today in Devon and Cornwall brought about by 16/19 150s in service with 3 Turbos. The local MP has been looking at problems at Torre with the return school traffic not being able to get on the trains. Years ago in HST days there used to be a London train timed to leave Paignton at about 15.30. This used to mop up a lot of the school traffic. It was before the half hourly Paignton-Exmouth began.
It is indeed a much better day, let's hope it lasts. The one 2 car is a 158/9, so must has shed a vehicle somewhere.

I make it 17 out of 19 150s in operation today. Perhaps 216 on 2P01 is the difference?

5 three car turbos today. Allows 1 to run to Barnstaple which I think they prefer. All the 2 car 158s and 165s have gone. There must have been a lot of complaints gone in the last few weeks.

Looks like there are extra IET services 2C01, 2C02 Bristol-Westbury extras for Bath half Marathon, and 2V01, 2V02 Westbury-Bristol are IETs instead of usual turbos on local services today

Very rare to see 9car IETs working local trains via Trowbridge (2V01, 2V02) instead of 158s and 165x

Strangely the third extra train 2C03 and return 2V03 appears to be operated by 2car 158766. Not sure what the point of operating an extra that is only 2cars is.

Moving 130ish people instead of none?

Barnstaples it is broadly 1 of the 3 circuits departing Barnstaple at:-
0726, 1035, 1335, 1639 and 1942

Exmouths it’s broadly 4 of the 6 circuits, so to make it easier to type the following are booked NOT to be Turbos:-
0725, 0925, 0955, 1057, 1257, 1324, 1424, 1626, 1656, 1756, 1958

This is what is timetabled to happen; substitutions can and do happen.

Barnstaple can't technically be booked for a turbo, it has to be an ad hoc swap, due i believe to the stations with Harrington humps

I think it would be more fair to say “there is a booked Turbo to Barnstaple!“

Class 166 Diagram PM460 includes a working to Barnstaple:

2B86 20:54 Exmouth to Barnstaple
2E96 22:41 Barnstaple to Exeter SD.

PM354 diagram today was the departures I listed previously from Barnstaple. PM3xx diagrams are West 165/3

Monday with four turbos on the "Devon Metro" was a perfect allocation with the 158s and 150s. Today spoiled by one short form 150 (lucky it's half term) and a two hour gap at Okehampton destroying any credibility that it is a commuter service. Do the passengers get bussed to Exeter?

Sadly from time to time cancellations occur. Passengers from Okehampton will have travelled on the service an hour later and for passengers from Crediton there would have been a train half an hour later.

Getting buses at short notice would have been unlikely and isn’t normally done when there is another train in an hours time.

"Devon Metro" has has got worse today. Still with four turbos but from 8 150s Monday to six today, one to Barnstaple, and an unsuitable 2 car 158 on Paignton Exmouth

Probably worn out after 18 months of propping up the turbo fleet.

A 150/2 is showing to be working around Bristol this afternoon, down to Severn Beach and a few workings to Filton, unsure whether this is true or the RTT allocation is incorrect

eg

2K16 0738 Taunton to Severn Beach is a HST as far as Bristol TM today, to enable a Turbo to stay in the Exeter area to boost the shortage there!

Yesterday there seemed a real shortage in the West, only saw 2 turbo's, one of those was a 2 car.

The daily Axminster cancelled 3 out of 5 weekdays this week too, I believe.
Thats down to shortage of drivers, only "High speed" drivers sign the route, that is the old FGW driver grade who are on better T&C, to cut a long story short, its a grade that is ultimately dead so anyone who retires from it etc is replaced with the newer "GWR driver" grade - who currently don't sign the route, so the number of High Speed drivers is always reducing. Obviously there has to be a point that they start training the new grade on the route as it is an important diversionary!
