As at 5:35 on Tuesday 24 October, regular credit card was not being accepted

Successfully used card at same station last Friday and at other stations last Saturday and last Sunday

All four instances tickets purchased via the forum’s ticket buying site

I was intending to collect today tickets purchased 7 September re travel this Friday. So plenty of time to try again and use a different card

And will also try to use credit card in a shop today

Any thoughts

I had that picking up tickets booked by my work a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately I have an AMEX and a VISA card. Can't mind which I used first, but switched to the other and was able to collect tickets.

Something very simple, give the chip a clean on your card, normally sorts it out when I have trouble collecting.

I had the same, I just put the card straight back in again and it worked fine.

Either try the card again, try a different machine or try a different card. Try giving the chip a bit of a rub as well.

I found out you simply need A card to collect tickets after the machine rejected mine but not a strangers!

it depends - retailers can set a booking to 'any card' or 'same card' collection.

oh - that is interesting news - why would you do that?
Particularly in the days before 3DS etc, it was to make buying tickets with stolen card details harder as you'd need the physical card at the station. Its no where near as much of a problem these days, but most retailers still set it (the forum's site doesn't, though if there was a spike in certain types of fraud it may have to - the confirmation screen/email should make it clear whether its any card or not)

I believe part of it was to help stop a big refund/tout scam.
Without it, all that was needed to buy tickets online was the card details. A popular deal was to buy a large number of day Travelcards and the sell them on, for cash, to a ready market in central London (before Oyster there were plenty of customers).

Some TVMs allow contactless to be used for TOD, it's worth trying this if inserting the card doesn't work.

Many thanks to all who, as always, have provided most helpful replies

I was wondering whether it was some network issue, or bank problem

As I had indicated, I much later did a chip and pin purchase, at lunchtime today. Which perhaps equals a clean and polish

And this evening successfully collected the rail tickets, using exactly the same ticket machine and card that I had tried this morning

As said I had allowed 72 hours ahead of the travel this Friday, so loads of time to resolve
