Good point - that would make six, so I wonder if NR saying there are five crossings with manual gates means the Middleton Towers crossing wasn't included in their total?

(Dullingham is being upgraded - presumably to full-barriers - as part of the current Cambridge area re-signalling project, along with Dullingham signalbox closing).

Middleton Towers is a TMO (Train man operated) crossing. The 5 mentioned above are gates operated by a signaller or crossing keeper. If TMO's were included you would also have the following in addition to Middleton Towers...

Knodishall TMO
West House TMO
Saxmundham Road TMO
Leiston Station TMO
Sizewell TMO

All of which are on the Sizewell Branch in Suffolk.

You could also potentially include Sheringham West Occasional use crossing which is a unique type of manually operated crossing.


Brundall Church and the ones with gates that open outwards are User Worked Crossings (sometimes with R/G Lights) so would not be counted either.

What's the situation at Parsonage Lane, Margaretting? Several years ago when I was there it was plastered with closure notices, and I witnessed a Tesco delivery van cross over. I suppose it has been closed or reduced to a non-vehicular crossing?

It is closed to the public, but remains open for private vehicular access only (to the handful of properties accessed from it).
