Ghostly face.jpgThe attached photo is interesting. It shows my brother and sister. I guess my sister is aged about 9, in which case the picture was taken in 1955. I have a faint but uncertain recollection that it is near Brickenden in Hertfordshire (nearest station is Bayford on the Hertford Loop). It was taken either by me or my father. The figure behind my sister appears not to have any legs. We certainly didn't notice him at the time. In fact, I'm not sure if anyone noticed him until about 15 years ago, when my sister scanned some old photos. The figure seems to be in a different lighting level. A possible explanation would be that I was there at time standing very close behind my sister, but then there's the problem of the lack of legs, the way the figure behind seems to merge into my sister, and what looks like a beard, which I certainly didn't have aged 16.

I'm afraid that just looks like a face like pattern in her hair to me?

Two occasions; both similar. The night my father died he and my mother were lying asleep in bed when they heard somebody on the narrow roof outside their window. My father got up to look out, drew back the curtains and immediately the windows were pounded hard and rapidly. My mother said "Don't do that, you'll break the window!". My father said "That wasn't me." I should add that the roof was about 18 feet above the ground and inaccessible without ladders and a bit of climbing and balancing. In short, there was 'nobody' there.

The second event was my grandfather dying. My mother and I had gone to the hospital to be with him while my wife stayed at home (in what had been my grandfather's house for many decades). At the moment he died, my wife back at home heard the back door slam (it had been shut) with an impact that shook the floor. Once again, nobody there.

I remember telling my grandfather's sister about these events and she was very matter-of-fact about it, saying "Aye - that often happens."

Unfortunately, regardless of how many times this sort of thing happens to people, with independent corroboration, you'll get the naysayers with their chants of 'you're imagining it' or 'you were overwrought' and 'where's the scientific evidence? Nowhere!' When this comes from someone who believes in a deity, I find it particularly galling, given they can produce no scientific evidence their belief has any credibility or rationality.

There's a whole thread of worms to be opened up as regards science and its veracity or lack thereof (ie: its degree of reality independent of the perspective of its human observers) I suspect.

Same here (only after you pointed it out though admittedly!).

Tend to agree. Similar to face like patterns in clouds, when staring at the sky!

Thank you, Rationalists! I'd much prefer you to be right. But I don't find you as convincing I'd like you to be. What the thing in the picture is I really do not know. Perhaps I've looked at it too many times, seeing it as ghostly face, that I cannot now "unsee" it that way. At any rate, it illustrates how difficult discussions of this type are.

I couldn't see the 'ghostly face' when I looked at the photo closely for the first time, nor a couple more times having read the comments. Now I've scrutinised it again, suddenly I can see what you see, and I can't 'unsee' it either, so I can't really come to a balanced conclusion. I suspect, though, it's an eerie coincidence and it was in fact your sister's hair, assuming she had quite a lot of it under that hat. That's from someone who doesn't automatically reject such claims as irrational, or mumbo jumbo.

Maybe not supernatural, but rare and unusual perhaps.
One of my uncles had a tale of encountering a migratory "rat army" numbering thousands as he cycled home from the pub one night.
It was early during WW2, during a spell of heavy frosts. He was cycling between villages after closing time and found his way blocked by the stream of rats crossing the road. Like the reputed tales of lemming convoys, but rats. They streamed past him, both front and rear for about ten minutes before disappearing into the fields. The nearest farm buildings were a mile away as was the nearest village, but the numbers involved seemed excessive for them to have come from there.

How many people won't bother to reply "Not to me?" But No.
Nor to anybody else in my family or my extensive group of friends (obviously that I know of.) We are quite open-minded and chat freely and I'm sure that they wouldn't keep quiet to avoid ridicule.
