I'm planning to visit Edinburgh then Glasgow, each for a couple of days. Is it ok to do that with one off-peak return London to Edinburgh?

Well to give a nice easy answer. London to Edinburgh is valid via Glasgow.

A break of journey is allowed on the return portion.

So with the ticket you mention, then yes. Id suggest going to Edinburgh first, then breaking your journey at Glasgow on the way back. You would have to go back via the West Coast mainline on the way home though to avoid doubling back and going through Edinburgh again.

Make sense?

Of course, provide more info, and some experts on here may give you cheaper options. But thats a simple answer with the ticket you have mentioned.

That would be because they have got you doubling back on yourself if you go Edin to Glas then down to Kings Cross. So they charge you more.

Although slightly different, I recently did:

Edinburgh - London KX
London Euston - Glasgow Central (originally Edinburgh but change of plan via the pub!)
Glasgow QS - Edinburgh

I did this all in one day on a super off-peak return, so assuming you depart/arrive in london at the right times on your days, it should be fine. The ticket gates accepted the same ticket between Glasgow and Edinburgh.

An any permitted off peak return to Glasgow is a lot cheaper than one to Edinburgh.
So you could get a ticket to Glasgow instead, then break your journey in Edin on the way back. Go out from Euston and back via Edin to Kings Cross.

It should still be valid via York, even though there is a more expensive 'via York' ticket. It is any permitted afterall. Someone confirm the any permitted is valid via York though?

My ticket was between Edinburgh and London terminals, it said 'any permitted' route and it was accepted via York on ECML (it let me reserve a seat on an EC service)

Nooo, I was on about any permitted London to Glasgow off peak return. Its much cheaper than London to Edinburgh. Only thing that made me wonder, was because there is a more expensive 'via York' ticket.

Oh the joys of simplification!! That was only done so EC could massively increase their off peak fares. Virgin hate anytime ticket people, and EC hate off peak ticket people!!
EC have shown us how nationalised companies have got worse and worse over the years!! Then again, it has got a woman in charge who is privatisation through and through.

Getting away from the joys of all this though Yorkie. Is the any permitted off peak return from London to Glasgow valid via York and into Kings X?


Edit: I can answer my own question. It is valid into Kings Cross, but with different restrictions. You have to follow the same restrictions as East Coasts Super Off Peak tickets. So the same ticket has different restrictions depending on which London terminal you go into. This is the privatised rail industry at its best!!

So, there actually is no point in getting the off peak return to Glasgow. If you can stick to the harsher restrictions of a super off peak ticket though, then get a super off peak return from London to Edinburgh. Its 10p less than the off peak to Glasgow!! Apologies for confusing you. Does this all make sense?
Either take the off peak or super off peak to Edinburgh. Break of journey on way back in Glasgow, and head down the West Coast to Euston afetrwards. The Super Off peak will have Virgins nicer restrictions on the return into Euston, so this is possibly your best bet. Price is £114.60

Yes but its use is much more heavily restricted than to/from Euston. It takes Restriction 5F.

These restrictions apply Monday to Friday. By any train on other days. For travel FROM or VIA: London (including Luton Airport Parkway, Luton, Milton Keynes, Watford Junction and Reading) but not Kings Cross, Stevenage & St. Pancras Int’l.

Outward Travel - You may travel on any train that is scheduled to DEPART London Euston at or after 0905.

Return Travel - You may travel on any train that is scheduled to ARRIVE London Euston at or after 1005.

Restriction 9F applies for journeys from/via Kings Cross & Stevenage.

Available as listed below MONDAYS-FRIDAYS (By any train on Bank Holidays and other days).

Outward travel NORTHBOUND – by any train scheduled to DEPART:
London Kings Cross between 0929 and 1457 inclusive & at or after 1859. Also allowed at or after 1815 on Fridays and Thursday 21st and Thursday 28th April 2011.
Stevenage between 0939 and 1507 inclusive & at or after 1909. Also allowed at or after 1835 on Fridays and Thursday 21st and Thursday 28th April 2011.

Yeah i saw that in the end and corrected myself. It was the fact there was a more expensive 'via york' ticket that put me off to start with!!
