Kilrush is a renowned dolphin-watching spot, thanks to a large pod of bottlenose dolphins resident in the Shannon estuary a little way off the town. Also big on the present-day dolphin scene is Chanonry Point on the Moray Firth: near Fortrose (Highland).

Sanquhar has the world's oldest curling society, formed in 1774. The first known written mention of curling, or a recognisable ancestor of the sport: tells of its taking place in 1541 at the then abbey of Paisley, Renfrewshire.

Busby in East Renfrewshire also lies on the line of the White Cart Water.
Busby has a pub called the White Cart -- naturally, after the above-named watercourse; nothing to do with pale-coloured animal-drawn conveyances. On that general pub-naming theme: England must have scores of pubs called the Waggon and Horses; one of which is in Halstead, Essex.

In the 1970s and 80s, Leicester City Transport Dept had a number of Scottish-built Volvo Ailsa buses (a type admired by some enthusiasts for their noisy thrash and characteristic gearbox sounds).

One of the largest fleets of Ailsas of all was in its home country, operated by Tayside Regional Council, based in Dundee.

The novelist and poet Flora Thompson (1867 -- 1947), best-known for her semi-autobiographical trilogy Lark Rise to Candleford, was employed as a post-office clerk at various places in southern England, including for a while Yateley. She is buried at Dartmouth, Devon; having died at Brixham in that county.

Brighouse, West Yorkshire, is also twinned with a settlement in the German State of Nordrhein-Westfalen. Henley-on-Thames's "twin" is Leichlingen; Brighouse's is Luedenscheid.

Queensbury is home to the Black Dyke Band, which claims to be the most famous brass band in the world. Nevertheless the band ranked No1 is the Cory Band, from Ystrad, Rhondda Cynon Taf, South Wales.

Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, is also twinned with a settlement in China. York's "twin" is Nanjing; Sunderland's is Harbin (Manchuria).

Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Crediton was founded by Edward VI, refounded by Elizabeth I, and survives today as Queen Elizabeth's School, a state-run academy.

Another surviving school originally founded in the name of Elizabeth I is Queen Elizabeth's School in Barnet, North London.

Tewkesbury Abbey (or more strictly the Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin) is said to have the largest Norman church tower still in existence and be the third largest church in Britain that is not a cathedral.

It is beaten in the ecclesiastical size stakes by Westminster Abbey and Beverley Minster at Beverley in the East Riding of Yorkshire.
