As a slight aside, it looks like the tunnel under Wallgate is going to have to be dealt with sooner or later. The last time I looked both bores were being propped up with supporting equipment which has been in place for quite some time.
Yes there has been equipment "holding up" the tunnel for quite some time now
A picture through Wigan Wallgate's tunnel looking at some supports that seem to be holding up the tunnel

Will be interesting to see what comes out of the wash as we've been told first units transfer north for December timetable change, with all transferred by May 24. To this end the training on 323s is being planned now for taking place later this year.
December for the 323s? All in by May 2024. Id be surprised if you get your first unit by May 2024 to be honest.

Hmmm - all WMR 323s gone in ten months - that is hugely optimistic in my view - but I am not from WMR so don't know the state of play with New St crew training on 730/0s. I don't think there has been any driving training runs around Birmingham just yet.
No training has started at new Street I believe.

I was planning a trip to the north west to sample classes 197, 230, 769 and 777, but I note from RTT that the Southport - Manchester route is entirely operated by Sprinters today, although at least one 769 was running yesterday. Is today a one-off?

It is quite rare to have no 769s running on Weekdays. Typically there's 3 or so out so there's probably more than just the one missing diagram due to staff issues.

Apparently 769959 is being dragged to Kilmarnock today, any reason why?

12 miles to East Kilbride from Glasgow Central? A fair bit of which is already under wires with more to come soon.
There are 1001 possibilites really. How about wrapping in Sealink livery to work the Glasgow - Stranraer "boat trains", except I guess the "boat services" are probably from Cairnryan these days !!!

Given their reliability - Stranrar wouldn't disrupt Sealink passengers too much then.

After a promising start to the year, with six Northern 769s in traffic on a number of days, from RTT their availability seems to have nosedived over the past couple of weeks. Lots of 15x stand-ins on 769 diagrams. Does anyone know what the problems are?

There's DMUs standing in for regular electric units too so it seems there is a backlog at Allerton. The change over from 319s to just 323s and 331s could be having an impact perhaps.

RTT suggests there were 5 out yesterday and 5 out today (7 different units). So perhaps there is cause for optimism - or just a fluke. Obviously things change day by day.

23/01: 769431, 442, 448, 450, 458
24/01: 769431, 434, 442, 450, 456

For some days (since the diagramming went back to 6/8 from 4/8) there were 6 out regularly, but has slipped on the past week or so, and has been as low as 3. Perhaps one point is that in late Dec/Jan engineering work on the Bolton line has meant no 769's out on a Saturday (there is already no booked work on a Sunday) so perhaps there has been a reaction to being woken up on a cold Monday having stood for 2 days.............poor things!

Well yesterday and today were certainly an improvement over Monday 22nd, when I think only 442, 448 and 450 were out. But Friday 19th was worse still - only 442 and 450 started the day and both failed in the morning peak, leaving the service in tatters. So perhaps it's more the case that they need the weekend to recuperate after an exhausting week!

I travelled on 769448 on the 1033 Southport as far as Manchester Victoria. Performed very well and sitting in the pantograph coach got a good 319 thrash from Kearsley to Salford Crescent.
