I notice that this Avanti West Coast service from Edinburgh to London Euston is running over 5 hours late due to signalling problems in the Carnforth area. Due to the severe late running, it is now terminating at Preston, due in around 03:00. It left Edinburgh late due to a chaotic day on the WCML, caused by a tree blocking the railway at Nuneaton for several hours, displacing train crew and srock.

My question is, for anyone onboard this train requiring stations south of Preston and onwards to London Euston, what are their options? Are Avanti obliged to provide alternative transport and/or overnight accommodation? Granted it’s very late at night however there is a sizeable wait for the next service to London Euston, from Preston.

The Caledonian Sleeper is due, however I’m not sure that they’ll be able to accommodate Avanti pax?

Yes, Avanti do have a practical obligation to get people to their destination in this instance but unless you are there it is impossible to know from RTT what they are doing to ensure that happens. Given the disruption there may in fact be very few passengers aboard actually going that far.

Passengers travelling from Edinburgh to London booked on this train could have been accommodated on services using the East Coast given the late departure from Edinburgh for example, and the preceding Glasgow train made it through to London.

There are some comments on Twitter about passengers in the opposite direction having a tortuous journey tonight.

There was also an extra 9T62 0010 Preston to London Euston that ran under short term plan arrangements this morning, which covers the stations further south.

The sleeper is definitely not due anytime soon, we're still stopped at ~3 miles from Oxenholme
They would get to London quicker than us even if they took the first train the next morning

Given 9M62 arrived in Carlisle at 2154, and 9T62 left Preston at 0010, I do wonder whether some other means was had of getting passengers between the two stations.
