I tapped my Apple Watch before boarding a train and when asked to show ticket onboard, I presented my watch - the express card setting is different from the default card and it scanned the wrong one. I asked the man to scan again, this time with the right one.

My question is, what’s going to happen with the first card that was scanned on the train? It will now appear somewhere as an unticketed fare?

You'll get charged a maximum fare for a failed revenue inspection (note not a Penalty Fare). Should that device fail a further revenue inspection then it will be blocked from further use on the TfL network.

And if you call up TfL and explain what happened, you will probably get the failed inspection fee refunded.

I know I’m going to get a world of pain from this. The card that scanned the first time is one that has been refusing to be registered on Apple Pay with the TfL website, even though it happily charges. That’s why i swapped it out for travel. They’ve never been able to track my journeys on it, despite doing the unregister, register dance to get it added. I’ll have my card statement to prove it, at least.

The Inspector can do a COUNTER TAP which cancels out the wrongly tapped card but this has do be done straight away and the correct card inspected.

The Inspector also ideally should be asking “Is this the card or device that you touched in with” to avoid this situation in the first place.

That’s not really practicable when inspecting a whole train.

I always ask if its the card they tapped in with, though admittedly the only time I use a RID (Revenue Inspection Device) is between Reading and Pad non stop.

I did ask if he could cancel it and he said no. Thanks for the replies everyone.

Comparatively few people on that journey will be using contactless as compared to e-tickets/paper tickets. It would be impracticable on an Elizabeth line train where a sizable proportion is using contactless and quite a lot of people likely not to be native English speakers and to therefore misunderstand the question.

Hence why I said that admittedly I only encounter this between Reading and Paddington.

Oddly, the TfL charge that was pending as 10p that day has now disappeared and no charge had been taken from the erroneous card. I wonder if they realised that the card was registered to the same TfL account as the card that I subsequently had scanned correctly, and cancelled it.
