Evening all,
Could someone tell me what a grade 5 signaller will take home 4 weekly with their Sundays and night allowance no OT. Thanks
How many Sundays on the Roster per 4 weeks? 8hr or 12hr? Do you not have a pay matrix for the current year?

All Occupational Health stuff is coming in house to NR from November-ish. so couldn't tell you, luckily I got Victoria (did have to travel on a strike day so was very lucky too), could be better waiting till then if you can.

But also welcome to the ROC! Brighton fans aren't welcome (they are I just don't want anymore) do you know what panels you'll be doing or are you a pool Signaller?
With regards to occupational health going in house later on in the year, just wondering if anyone has any ideas on this.

I had my medical around 4 weeks ago through optima & gave high blood pressure readings. They passed me due to other factors and asked me to monitor at home and send a letter through from my GP if all was clear.

The readings I have given since at home have all been fine, but getting barged from pillow to post on getting a letter to confirm from my GP.

Has anyone had anything similar where you’ve had to send a letter in to optima & is it really worth me doing it if it’s going in house later on in the year?

Any advice anyone can give would be great.

I have recently completed the psychometric tests for the grade 2 in the high peak/guide bridge area. The questionnaire was very odd and ambiguous, at least it seemed that way to me. Some I felt like I didn’t really agree on both sides, and some where I agreed on both too!
The grid challenge was by far the hardest (the memory then task, memory, task).
That’s the only thing I’m worried about on the test really, but reading through here it seems like I’ll be fine?
After I get the results (and if I pass), it’s then whether I get shortlisted for interview/more assessments, right?
Just looking for a general timescale for the speed of application.
Also wondering if anyone else here also went for this area?

If you are successful with the tests, you will then have your application scored on your CV and the answers to the questions asked on the application. If you meet the required standard, you will then be invited to an interview and do a scenario test. The scenario test is completed on line.
In my example, I applied in June and was interviewed at the beginning of July. I was offered the job two weeks after and I start in January 2024. Much of the issue surrounding start dates is whether they have spaces available at the Initial Signaller Training schools (IST) In my case I have a six month wait from being offered the job (depending on the medical)

Thank you, this helps a lot.
Good luck at training school!

Hello everyone,

I am new to the forum :)

I have recently applied for the Signaller grade 2 in Valley North Wales. I have been fortunate to receive an interview date and online assessment which I have just completed. I am being asked to upload ID to the ID portal, which in the email I did not get a link. I can not see anywhere on the career hub to upload ID. Is the ID portal a completely different page? If anyone could advised me of the address I would be most grateful, thank you :)

I had the same thing recently. I received a link to the ID portal a couple of days after the interview email, so I'm guessing you'll be the same.

I was succesful in being offered a position at Three Bridges ROC in July, with a start date of 8th January 2024. I have been given a medical appointment for the 9th October. All good so far. Then I notice that it's in Doncaster which is over 180 miles away! I ring the company to be informed that they have no other appointments available and their contract ends on 13th October. Has anyone else been given such a ludicrous location and did Network Rail offer any financial support in having to attend. It just seems very unreasonable. I have emailed their generic email address and I am waiting for a reply.
Well done.

It's not uncommon for employees to travel a long distance to attend a medical. I've known colleagues travel from Lincolnshire down to London (not so bad), Manchester and even Glasgow. I'm not aware of any financial assistance being provided, but I would like to hope that NR provide a travel ticket to the venue.

Got my first proper pay (I.e non training pay) and I’ve received £200 back pay, anyone know what this is for? I’ve only been employed since July and I don’t wanna suddenly have to pay something back that I shouldn’t have received!
Probably back pay for when you moved up a grade from a training grade to your actual grade.

Happened to me, I got paid about 2 days worth of backpay at the higher grade

I agree.. Everything is scored by the looks of it, from your CV, to answers and then the testing and interview. I applied in March, interviewed in May and start Signalling School in 3 weeks. Its a long process and messy at times but worth it

Sadly no. I’ve passed the assessments on 5 separate occasions, and am still yet to be offered an interview.

Fair play. Good luck and hopefully you get that opportunity soon.

For the forum. I have Seen this pay scale attachment for the different signaller grades. Little bit confused though. The top part has the different grades salaries, but the bottom part has the yearly relief premiums. Is your yearly salary as a signaller the bottom yearly relief part? Or the top part?

Hi all,

Again thank you for the invaluable information once again. I’m posting for anyone embarking on the AON psychometric tests. I submitted mines yesterday and was sent the pass email today (yayyy) and I wanted to share a few things that helped me as its not the easiest of things to do.

1. Ensure your internet connection is without a doubt strong!
2. You have 72 hours to complete it so don’t go straight in for the kill on a whim.
3. PRACTICE - PRACTICE - and PRACTICE on the demo’s that come with them before hand. Even if you slow down after a bit from repetition that’s fine as it will give you space to exercise accuracy.
4. Be your own biggest fan and cheer yourself on!!!

It had been a very long time since I had done quick maths and I was absolutely petrified of the multitasking challenge because I have Dyscalculia. What helped me was:
1. Saying the equations aloud (When trying to figure it out in my head I either went blank or random stuff like “tree barks” bombarded my thought process)
2. The App “Math Games - Memory Training” which I downloaded from the App Store was a treasure. As well as numerical math exercises, it had a memory game similar to the one in the Grid Challenge which I found to be Super helpful.

Even though I now have the waiting period for being told whether I have an interview invite, I’m happy that I got this far to know what to expect should I need to reapply in the next 6months.

I hope this helps someone :)

If you’re a Resident then the top line ‘Basic’ is your basic pay. If you’re a Relief then it’s whichever % Relief your role states.
Obviously these are basic figures and don’t include nights, Sundays, overtime etc but all the figures are there should you want to estimate things.

Well done. I passed my assessments too for a Signaller role I applied for and got the email this morning. I’m just waiting to see if i get an interview or not.

Thank you. Overtime I understand will obviously be extra on top, but won’t nights/ weekends etc be included in that basic salary? Surely being shift work, the basic salary is inclusive of it all or do NWR do it differently?

Nope, every box and to an extent every signaller, will work a different number of nights or Sunday shifts, and every months pay will end up being different. If you never work a night or a Sunday (there are Monday to Saturday day shift only signal boxes) then Basic is what you’ll end up with.

Hi all, I have successfully completed my full application process including onboarding and medical (pretty stressful but no complaints). I want to thank everyone for the wealth of knowledge in this forum and wish the best of luck to everyone starting the application process. If I can answer any questions I will definitely try either in this forum or from dm's ( not sure if the forum has this capability). Now just waiting for a start date and hopefully starting IST in larbert in October.

Awesome. So in other words, highly likely to earn more monthly than the basic salary as if you’re working shift work, you will obviously work some Sundays, nights etc

Basically you have to work it unless you can find a qualified colleague who will do it instead

The old expected to work….I expect a lot of things they seldom happen.

Interesting to see it tested in court, I’ve known a few not book on and nothing happen.

Nightshift premium is worth buttons really in the grand scheme of things. Between twelve quid for a grade 1 and twenty three quid for a grade 9 per shift worked.

True, but do a couple of those a month, still adds a bit extra to your monthly salary. Every little helps especially in this current climate

Hi everyone. Just got a grade 5 signaller role and just wondering what it means by the following:

“While training, staff will be paid on the basis of either the rate of pay and allowances associated with their previous position or their previous basic rate of pay and the new allowances, whichever is the greater.”

I’m on 34k now (not a signaller) - what does this mean for me?
Did you ever get an answer for this as I’m in the same boat at the moment
