All 319's are off-lease at the end of November. The plans have been drawn for disposals.
If this is confirmed then we can’t do anything but accept the capacity reductions. Is it correct that the 331 movements will take place before November then? It does seem rushed to remove the 319s before the timetable change, rather than leaving disposal until afterwards.
Nevertheless, currently Northern has twelve 319s diagrammed in traffic M-F, of which four diagrams are peak only. There are no cuts to the timetable, so if all the 319s are withdrawn those 12 must be replaced by other stock.

Currently one 323 and one 331/0 are diagrammed as stabled all day, so if they are brought into traffic, e.g. on Liverpool - Wigan diagrams, that leaves ten 319 diagrams to be replaced.

Reported upthread that the NW is gaining 12 331/1s in exchange for 10 331/0s. Currently two 319s are diagrammed on Liverpool - Blackpool services, which the website implies will remain 4-car, so that accounts for two of the twelve 331/1s. In order that "some" of the Liverpool to Wigan services remain 4-car as Northern has promised, at least one 331/1 will have to be diagrammed on this route to replace a 319, leaving seven 319 diagrams to be replaced. Also a /1 can take over a /0 Liverpool to Airport diagram in order that "some" of those services become 4-car as promised. The /0 would then take over another 319 Liverpool - Wigan diagram, leaving six 319 diagrams to be replaced. Assuming at least 10 of the 331/1s in traffic, six 331/1 diagrams could then replace double 331/0 formations on the Airport - Blackpool route, releasing another 12 single 331/0 diagrams. Currently a total of 18 331/0s are diagrammed to work in 9 pairs on Blackpool North services, so there would still be "some" 6-car services as promised.

Currently three 331s are on exams at Allerton daily. Assuming this remains the same with the slightly larger fleet (the mix of /0s and /1s would vary from day to day), still only four 331 diagrams (including up to two /1s) would be available to replace the remaining six 319 diagrams not accounted for above, after sending the ten 331/0s to Yorkshire.

How could the deficit of two diagrams be covered? One 323 diagram is currently allocated to crew training. I do not know if this will be ongoing after December. Also one 323 and one 331/0 are diagrammed to be away at Wolverton on heavy maintenance. I do not know if these programmes will be ongoing continuously. Otherwise DMUs might have to work a diagram or two, some weeks at least.
I am grateful that someone has sat down to do some of this working out, given the obvious (all diagrams need to be covered by something) and if your assessment is correct, then it is near impossible to do this without either Diesel under the wires, even starker reductions in 6 car services, reducing maintenance or cutting other functions which use spare units such as training or even just rescue purposes.

None of this accounts for actual passenger loadings which may well be too high for many of these shorter formations. The peak only diagrams are a particular conundrum. They would be easier to get rid of than all day ones, if they were desperate for a unit, but doing so may have greater consequences. It appears my concerns may have been accurate.

A slight exaggeration. What Northern's website actually states for the North West is:

Sure they started training on the 323s before covid19 on the Bolton line but never happened since.

I seem to remember they went to various places to clear them but the work was by drivers that already signed the traction like Piccadilly and Liverpool.

After 156413s tractor fun times will this unit be needing to go back to Wolverton?

One for you Dave.

Could we try and keep on the subject of Northern unit refurbishments in this thread please.

If anyone wants to discuss other things then start a new. We can always move posts into it if you let us know which ones.

Thanks

What will happen about the Liverpool Lime Street-Manchester Victoria peak extras being extended to Stalybridge when electrification is completed?

When "incidents" like the one with 156413 occur (hopefully not too many!) there is a process to assess the damage and decide whether repairs can be done locally and who with or externally (and who with). 156413 will be going away at some point.

As a lay person it would to me seem sensible to me to do any driver training using a Northern 323s before the WM 323's move north.
By the looks of things Northern's electric fleet is a bit stretched, with the 319s going before the end of the year, I think there may not be many spares about for training.

Are you able to share the video?

Also, all Turbostar's in Northern I believe have now been fitted with TrainFX. The only trains that are still original are the 333's.

TrainFX on the 170s isn’t really that good. The audio is incredibly muffled, and more often than not there’s interference when the guard and driver give two on the buzzer.

I know the following have TrainFX fitted:
170453
170454
170455
170456
170457
170458
170461
170472
170473
170474
170475
170476
170477
170478

I would guess they're currently doing 170459 and 170460 as they haven't been in use. I keep track because they're on the Harrogate Loop a lot.

460 currently appears to be in for a C6 exam.
459 is at Holbeck for TFx mods.

The 5Z56 Wolverton to Heaton is running this morning. Hopefully 156448 returning. 156490 which was to go last time is in service today, and unless a swap takes place will finish in Carlisle tonight.
