I am aware - however my understanding is the 47 is almost never busy enough for XLBs which is why you often find suggestions to move them elsewhere. I was assuming the only reason the 47 is allocated to them is because the peak time 47B runs may be busy enough to justify them, among the other few runs that operate during the day that are busy.
Then why not keep them on the 47/47B during peak hours, and have them on other routes any other time? I personally think Service 3 should have them, as it is very busy half the time, especially during peak hours, and on weekends. Maybe Service 3 could run on the MMCs during peak and the XLBs during normal hours?

And how do you propose interworking them between the route? Thats a lot of unnecessary dead milage. And the 3, while a busy route all day, is busiest at peak so suggesting having them off peak only to drop capacity at the busiest time is just outrageous. In addition to that the initial post said the 47 DOESN’T warrant XLBs at all let alone peak times so this suggestion is even more unbased. The 3 does justify XLBs or an increase to a 10 minute frequency but this suggestion is absolutely not the way to do it

To put it simply, this can’t work.

I would add a few changes to modern Lothian routes if this were to happen, listed below:

Service 26 - Timetable changes, to work with Service 59 in the Portobello/Musselburgh areas.

Service 34 - Curtailed to Hermiston Park and Ride. During necessary student hours, buses will continue to serve Heriot-Watt.

Service 44 - Now terminates at Eastfield. at Olive Bank Road, Service 44 will turn onto Eastfield and end at the terminus. Wallyford will now be served by Service 59. Some peak services will continue to serve Musselburgh, turning at the TESCO.

Even if, this service could really work well with Service 21 in its northern sector, relieving it of many passengers, and also linking all of Maybury Road by bus!
Curtailing the 44 removes most of Wallyford's services to the city centre (leaves only the X6 unless you can get down to the P&R) and a good chunk of Musselburgh's city services and all it's non-express buses along the Milton Road/Willowbrae route

for the 34 "student hours" would be most of the day from about 0800-2000, seems daft not to just serve into campus

So I’m certainly not knowledgeable about Lothian Buses city operation so bare with me.

Hypothetically If the XLBs were used on the 30 to the Queen Margaret via the A1 and removed from Stoneyhill therefore avoiding the low bridge at Newcraighall Rd, could the Evoras be better utilised on a quieter albeit relatively frequenct service elsewhere??

After all, the 30 is a rather busy route, often throughout the day.

XLBs would be too large on the 30 in my opinion. Of course it is busy, in a single decker, but if you put an 11.5m bus on it at it's current frequency even that would be most capable.

Edit: Ive noticed on all the flags that the SD Travel 16 has been covered over. I don't remember seeing anything about the service stopping in the coming changes to West Lothian tenders, unless I've missed something?
Are you sure they've been covered over systematically? Quite a few flags along Queensferry Road (the 16 route in Edinburgh) were replaced recently without much attention to detail. For example some just show operator name(s) without route numbers. It would seem rather early to be changing flags if the 16 is being withdrawn unannounced in West Lothian's October cull, and SD Travel still run the route - at least I witnessed a service earlier this evening.

There is a new silly arrangement with the flags where it just shows the operator rather than the services unless it is a busy stop like in the city centre or at interchange stops.

Yeah, in an ideal world every Edinburgh stop would have accurate flag listings of route numbers for all operators.

I suppose if the route numbers are clear from operator publicity shown at the stop then maybe this isn't too bad, and understandable if the team who do the updates are short-staffed at the moment. I wouldn't like people to be wasting time sticking obvious numbers on flags every few weeks if they could be doing something more useful instead.

Maybe a bit like washing the shelters - nice to have a high standard but could probably economise in some cases if needs must.

All ideal if they keep that up to date too, bus stop at Dalmahoy still has Blue Bus on it (I think from when they ran a morning 27 journey) which was years ago. I think I’ve seen Prentice Westwood on stops recently too, but can’t remember where.

I’ve seen this one too. I’ve also seen a Midland Bluebird X25 at Shandwick Place which has never operated and a missing X38 on Glasgow Road opposite Ratho Station. They would be better to just have a flag and make sure that the timetables are updated properly. One at Hermiston hasn’t been updated since 2012. It advertises the Horsburgh X5.

47B is well used by students at the Bush campus and justifies the route change in peak hours. The service doesn't need the XLBs on the southern section. I can't comment on the Queensferry Road section.

All this talk about bus stop flags isn't really anything to do with the forum topic, unless it's speculative. I'd suggest that anyone who wishes to continue the discussion should do so in a separate thread.

I've not seen much but from my observations I wouldn't say XLBs are needed on the Cammo section either, it can get busy but the passenger loads don't seem to fill up an XLB. Use up Queensferry Road to Barnton seems to be fairly split between the 43 and 47 with some (usually concessions) using the Stagecoach expresses, thus I'd say there's more than enough capacity. The 43 can get extremely busy in peak periods but most passengers seem to travel all the way to Dalmeny and Queensferry.

Given the 47 appears to have spare capacity and the 43 is often very busy, would a reintroduction of the X43 be warranted?

It seems like a no brainer to me but I’m sure there must be a reason it hasn’t returned. It discourages some city journeys while reducing journey times for country passengers.

Can’t see this happening unfortunately as the 43 is now the only route that the full length of Queensferry Road so you can’t really have it skipping stops.

Certainly not my experience when driving it. You can leave the west end with a standing load and only have a handful still on when you get past Barnton junction.

The X43 doesn’t need to replace the 43 it could just provide a few extra peak time limited stop journeys at the busiest times.

Would it not work if it were an extra service rather than 43’s turned into X43’s? I agree with the majority that the 47 really doesn’t need the XLB’s, but I in fact would like to see a slight restructure in Midlothian. Any X43 in my view should run non stop from Barnton to Echline Corner and do the Queensferry route in reverse.

My suggestion for Midlothian would be that all weekday 47’s serve Bush, with the 37 reduced to every 20 minutes and all journeys running to Penicuik Deanburn with the freed up XLB’s, much like a Saturday. The 47 could revert to B5TL’s E400mmc’s. An additional service (similar to how the 9 was introduced) could run along the busy Silverknowes to Surgeons’ Hall section to have the route every 10 minutes, beyond there I’m unsure of a potential route though. One idea I thought of was to run it to the QMU on the 30’s route (omitting Newcraighall) and withdraw it east of the City. XLB’s every 20 minutes on that should be ok. The 14 would be timed to maintain an every 10 minutes route between Niddrie and North Bridge. It may also need to gain the XLB’s too but this might be tricky. As a consequence of this, I would reduce the 19 to every 20 minutes off peak as well. The X15 would also return as it was planned for the March 2020 changes (that never happened) so as to maintain the higher frequency fast bus to town for Penicuik residents. Additional X37’s could also be looked at too. As a result of restoring the X15, the 141 could be withdrawn and replaced by the 140 as it was before. It might also be worthwhile adjusting routes so that the 30 could then be withdrawn completely.

Fair enough, I don't have much experience with the 43 - the couple of times I've used it I've had to stand to Queensferry.

Don’t get me wrong there are some journeys where you have a fair amount going through to Queensferry but I’d say overall the majority of passengers are on the City Centre - Barnton section. It’s probably why Stagecoach couldn’t make it work as I’d guess they didn’t carry many within the city whereas now the city passengers subsidise the Queensferry section. But that’s probably a topic for another thread.

I like this, but where would all the XLB's come from? Withdrawing them from 1 route and putting them on 3 routes? Besides that, it would work. Maybe keeping the 14 on Gemini 2s would be fine, and the new route could have some MMCs withstanding a 20 minute frequency, to coordinate with the busy north 37.

I think the current arrangement works well, but in my opinion the 3 needs XLBs. Despite the 12-15 minute frequency on deckers, it seems to be busy particularly from Gilmerton to Chesser. Maybe a 20 minute frequency on XLBs would work for the 3. The MMCs from the 3 could operate on the 47 with a 17-20 minute frequency, and this would leave a minor amount of MMCs left over for allocations. There's a more simplified explanation below.

Service 3 gains XLBs. The Enviro 400 MMC's will be in use on Service 47.
Service 37 + New Route has a coordinated 10 minute frequency in the Silverknowes - Surgeon's Hall strech.
Service 47 gains MMCs. The Enviro 400 XLB's will be in use on Service 3. This route will (potentially) serve Bush at all times in replacement of the 47B.
Service 47B is removed, and Bush will be served by revised counterpart 47.

Absolutely not, you’ve contradicted your own point as that would be a drop in frequency. The 3 is an extremely busy route throughout; a frequency decrease even with XLBs is an outrageous suggestion.

Talking specifically about the 3 though, it must be one of the worst offenders for bunching. I spent an hour or in Wester Hailes this time last week and the majority of 3’s were running in pairs. I wonder what mainly causes it besides ‘bad traffic’, as ultimately every route is affected in some capacity by that.

The 3 is a tricky one one for me to suggest what to do with, as it serves corridors I very rarely need to use. So for me to pass fair judgement would be unfair in my opinion. On the face of it, the every 12 minutes frequency doesn’t work. Having said that, there’s very obviously not enough of these XLB’s to please everyone. Ideally Lothian should have a minimum of 150 in the fleet, possibly reaching as many as 200.

I can't see any major changes happening before the Council completes it's Bus Network Review. One of the goals of this is faster journeys from Midlothian to Edinburgh by skipping some stops, so I could see potentially:
Route 3 cut to operate Gilmerton to Clovenstone only, route 3X going round the houses in Midlothian then skip stop into Edinburgh. Not sure where it would go from there, maybe continue as per the 3 to Clovenstone.
Alternatively you could half the frequency of the 3, introduce a 3X to enable the Clovenstone section to maintain the same overall frequency but then run 3X as skip stop on the way to Midlothian? That way you'd still be keeping the local connections from Mayfield and Dalkeith to Gilmerton, Moredun, Liberton etc but also allowing some faster journeys to/from Midlothian for those who want.

Edit: I'm suggesting using route number 3X rather than X3; putting the X first puts more emphasis on the limited stop factor, which is entirely irrelevant to people making journeys on the east side of the route.

What Buses are subsidised by East Lothian Council (Any Operator)?

Is there any of these Services that East Coast Buses could be interested in if they are every up for re-tender?

I always thought that if Eve Coaches was to give up the 120 that maybe East Coast Buses should give that route a try!

Great Suggestion.

I've been thinking that maybe is the 110, 120 & 121 would be possibly the best options.

As they used to pre-deregulation (although, I’m not sure if the Eastern Scottish numbers were all listed at the limited stops they served)
