So trains were not stopping anywhere south of Three Bridges but there? Wow.
It's difficult for anyone to comment without knowing when that happened or having any information about the circumstances.

Just to update this thread, after discussion with a friend last night I now understand that the disruption involved 4 separate trespass incidents, one of which involved (home) football supporters self-detraining to the ballast at Moulsecoomb from a delayed train.

By the time it became clear what was going on, it was too late to go back to the ground (against the flow of people) and find a bar, and there's nothing near the ground.

If you go from Falmer station in the opposite direction to the stadium, under the underpass to the other side of the A27, you'll find yourself on the Sussex University campus - there are plenty of bars there....

Also the Swan Inn is only 10 minutes walk from the station. That's where I visited pre match the only time I've been to the Amex.

These are all very well if you know about them. And, at the time, there was nothing to indicate what the nature of the disruption was or how long it might last.

Ah yes - the Swan up in the old Falmer village - a regular watering hole for people on the Sussex campus, especially when it sold the original type of Theakston's Old Peculiar.

It was your assertion that "there's nothing near the ground" that warranted a reply! You sounded very definite.

There isn't in the direction of Brighton!

The Sussex campus is in a sense "in the direction of Brighton" from the station/stadium, since there are frequent buses from the campus into Brighton; maybe more than the number which run down the main A27 past Falmer into Brighton.

I think every bus from the campus to Brighton stops at Falmer Station going via the Falmer overbridge.

There’s actually more from the A27 westbound stop than Sussex campus - every bus from the campus does indeed stop at Falmer Station, as well as the Regency 28/29/29A which serves Falmer Station but not the campus.

OK - my mistake - I don't hang out on the campus very much these days! (And when I did more regularly, it wasn't a dual carriageway on the main road there then, so you can see how out of touch I am...)

I know there are plenty of buses from B'ton to the campus which turn off the A27 onto a slip road of some sort well before they get to the university; I guess I was just imagining something in reverse where the buses heading into town didn't pick up the main road until on the Brighton side of Falmer. (Last time I was at an event there I went by train when leaving the campus.)

Having been in a queue for a train back into Brighton my priority was getting there with a view to continuing my journey. I wasn't focussed on, or interested in, exploring to kill an indeterminate amount of time.

The road there became a dual carriageway in 1981 so your advice might be a bit out of date!

Not quite as out of date as that, the sliproad from the A27 directly into the campus which I think @AlbertBeale is talking about was blocked off around 2010/11 and then removed entirely a year or two later https://www.google.com/maps/@50.862...e0!5s20110301T000000!7i13312!8i6656?entry=ttu

I think some buses from campus might have previously used/may still use the back road that also serves Stanmer Park and so do stay on the 'wrong' side of the dual carriageway.
