Hi all,

I'm looking to travel between Nuneaton and London Euston with Avanti West Coast on Tuesday, 12th September during the evening, returning a couple of days later.

A couple of quick questions:

1. Would 1A74 ex. Manchester Piccadilly, calling Nuneaton at 1943, arriving Euston 2041 offer any food and drink in First Class?

2. Avanti have given me a time of 2056 leaving Euston on the tube, arriving Paddington at 2109. Would this be enough time to walk from the platform at Euston to the tube?

3. Regarding the Avanti lounge at Euston, does the "before Avanti journey only" rule still apply, or would I be able to visit the first class lounge at Euston, if I had the time?

Thank you in advance.

Steve.

What route does Avanti suggest, given there isn't a direct tube from Euston (as opposed to Euston Square) to Paddington? Unless that arrival time at Paddington is crucial, missing the tube they give you only makes a few minutes' difference if you wait for the next one anyway, so the walking time hardly seems critical. (Though for Euston underground station, from a mainline platform there, the 15 minutes is more than adequate; but for Euston Square, it's tighter but still likely doable if you know the way.)

Also, if there happens to be a westbound 205 bus coming when you're leaving Euston mainline station, that'll get you directly to Paddington station in around 15 minutes.

In giving a 20:56 departure from Euston, the Avanti journey planner is not specifying the departure time of a particular tube service which it intends you to take. It is simply adding the 15 min minimum connection time at Euston onto the scheduled arrival time of your train from Nuneaton.

It then obtains the arrival time at Paddington by adding the (tube) transfer time between Euston and Paddington onto the 20:56 departure time. During the day between 07:00 and 19:00 that transfer time is 13 min, giving an arrival time at Paddington of 21:09. However, as the transfer is after 19:00 the transfer time should be 18 min, giving an arrival at Paddington of 21:14.

Because your journey simply ends at Paddington*, none of these times, nor the fact the Avanti journey planner has introduced a 5 min error in transfer time, are critical. Just make your way there via Euston Square by tube (Circle or H&C line). As you are booking a through ticket to Paddington, it will include the tube leg.

*However, if you were booking a separate, onward connection from Paddington, you'd need to be aware of Avanti's error. To have a valid through itinerary, the earliest departure time from Paddington would be 21:29, being the arrival time of the (tube) transfer from Euston, plus the minimum connection time at Paddington, which is 15 min.
