Agree but the question is where are the 150s. 14 yesterday and 13 today.
The Newquay was strengthened to a 4 car 150 on Monday, the Falmouth is running an enhanced service each evening this week both of which may have affected units being in the right places.

165105, 165107 and 165117 shall all be doing 387 impressions on Reading to Newbury work.
There is some problems with the OHLE that prevents 387's working in the Newbury area.

166219 is also helping out on the North Downs line.
Luckily the Henley On Thames branch is closed until today meaning an extra turbo was available to cover. A Basingstoke unit was also used meaning cancellations on that route.

The 150 fleet nearly every day provides "Plus 1" or often more units available to what is required and is very much relied on to cover for the regular short fall on Turbo stock. Of course this in the end has a negative impact too, as as the 150s burn up their exam miles quicker and it makes a mess of the exam regime as they are as a collective sometimes hitting 1,000 miles extra a day to "the plan".

Unusually two workings from Portsmouth to Bristol have been amended today, to First and Standard class, normally just standard class only.

Since when does 1F32 only go as far as Newport anyway?

There is a emergency possession in the Severn Tunnel tonight to fix an OHLE defect.
1F32 terminates at Newport and set ECS back to SPM to beat the block.

It's also the reason some of the last Swansea trains are via Lydney tonight.

Probably not the right thread to ask this but oh well!
Does anyone know whats happened to 166203? It failed on 1F16 earlier and has been sitting in a loop outside Bristol ever since. The passengers who were in the rear coach were told to move forward apparantly, so did they have to isolate the rear coach or something?

Hot Axle box detection, on inspection it was found to be a correct detection so unit was moved to the sidings at reduced speed.

Todays 2V82 seems to have been allocated a 158 and 166, an unusual 5car formation

That’ll be an error due to a set swap somewhere 158s and 16x are not compatible.

What sometimes happens is a set swap takes place but the original unit is left in the system thus RTT will show two units allocated.

In a similar vein, units can sometimes be shown in error to be in two places at the same time. e.g 165123 is currently shown on RTT to be en-route on both

2O88 0845 Swindon - Weymouth and
1O62 0901 Reading - Gatwick

Usually these discrepancies are corrected at some point during the day.

If of use to know, on Genius, it is only showing on the Weymouth diagram with no allocation shown on 1O62.

Requires a Skate move back to SPM.

And considering 158s have no first class, someone has presumably clicked the wrong button. Would be worrying if they were reactivating Cl166 first class on a random basis (though presumably a nice little earner!)

Let me give some background on this one

When allocating sets start of day, you'll often get some "bad couples" like this, rather than chopping the units off on the system there and then at 0200 in the morning and losing track of what you have and haven't done, instead the allocater will make notes of these and common practice is to leave the mismatch allocated until you have dealt with and resolved the issue, hence in the early hours especially you'll aee these kind of mismatches a lot, it doesn't mean it'll happen, it just means at some point in the day it was on the plan for the day (not to be confused with the actual train plan).

So for an example in this case, the fleet would be allocated as and when the respective depot or stabling point provide "their numbers ", once allocated I go through and check for "bad couples", make a note of them and then look for resolutions and note them down

It is pointless allocating the resolutions for 2100 at 0200 (for example), as chances are some disruption will happen and the unit will get displaced, but doesn't mean there isn't a plan ready to go.

The other thing I would say is, some controllers use the system to draft out a plan too, or to "safeguard" one, for example when HSTs do extra workings, I might allocate.it all start of day, the main purpose of this is to show the train on the traincrew system as being formed of a HST, so if crew phone up to swap later in the day and there isn't a realisation of the traction swap straight away, when they go to put it in the system there's a "oh no" moment and the swap isn't able to go through, but the allocation has been the fail safe.

Not an error at all, that is how it was genuinely allocated at the time.

Of note Devon was awful this morning. Short of Turbos there (as seems to be the norm) plus had a 3 car 158 stuck at Par and a 2 car 150 stuck at Plymouth following yesterdays disruption in Cornwall.

Obviously you must know this is a mistake ;)

And very very often (especially on southern TfW, though not 165s ofc) we get something like
165123+165123

4 166s down here at Paignton today but still a problem with not enough serviceable 150s. 2 car 150 working Barnstaple which will not go down well. 2F11 has no stock allocation.

Quite a few Cardiff-Portsmouth reduced to 3car today too.

The GWR 150s are 37 years old, getting replacement parts must be getting hard, and getting them in timely way is now clearly not possibly anymore

Lack of sufficient serviceable trains seems to happen far too often nowadays.

Hence all eyes being on the TfW cl158s which start coming off lease next year! Can GWR make a case to the DfT…
Will be an interesting case, can GWR lease some trains that will be 33 years old in 2024, that another Operator has replaced and offloaded because they deemed them too old, and becoming difficult to maintain, probably a bit of a money pit. But we are desperate for extra diesel trains, so please DfT can we have them.

And there is a chance TfW won't release the 158s until end 2024 or sometime in 2025. There is talk in TFW thread of the 158s being last of their old fleets to leave

The 150s are the last TfW units to leave the fleet.

It is still quicker than new build stock could be brought in, and quicker to bring into service because there is less training need.

If a bigger GWR fleet can be justified prior to fleet replacement in the late 2020s / early 2030s, it might make a case for that fleet replacement to have more vehicles as well.

Its no surprise the 150 fleet is starting to flag, its spent the past 18 months propping up the service thanks to failed turbos

My exact thoughts. I would consider them (other than known rust issues) pretty bullet-proof units, but I think the constant use of having to cover for other failures is now taking its toll on the fleet.

Those in the know will know in more detail, but turbo shortages have been well publicised on these pages, the 150 fleet has performed amazingly to keep the service running and sadly we're seeing a few 150's being poorly lately too.

Five turbos running out of Exeter today and 15 150s working. almost a perfect allocation in Devon and Cornwall.
