If the toc looks at your purchase history online is it going to show what's called doughnutting, ie on same day just purchased the first and last bit of a journey and the middle bit missing?

Just something to consider what they will see if they request your purchase history, may not apply to you but worth being aware of

Nobody who deals with these cases is going to believe that someone who lives in Letchworth takes a train to Hitchin to then get a lift all the way to London. Swiss cheese model of unlikely events:

- only holds the shortest possible ticket it is possible to have southbound from Letchworth
- is getting a lift from there to London
- has the lift cancelled, but with extreme misfortune, only in the 3 and a half minute window where they are between Letchworth and Hitchin
- stays on the train anyway without a ticket
- alights at a station where they can continue seamlessly on PAYG

Without some serious evidence to corroborate that any revenue staff worth their salt will just see that as untrue.
Just returned home after being away for two weeks and they did believe my side of the story and have agreed for me to pay the outstanding ticket plus a nominal fine.

This is a good result - thanks for letting us know.

Do bear in mind that the railway now have your name and address: if you end up getting the wrong ticket again, they will link back to this case and may not be so willing to take your word for what you were doing. So it's important to now be very careful to get the right ticket in future.

I don't think GTR waste much time on whether stories are true or false, they just want the fares paid and they almost always settle out of court on the first occasion. I wouldn't infer that the story was believed.

That they've given you an opportunity to settle isn't proof that they believed you. It's a good result though.

Thanks for letting us know. This is a decent result for you and I would expect for someone who engages with the process.
