I’d love to be on a Deltic out of Kings Cross, but those timings leave me cold, and I’d be very disappointed if I had booked the trip.

No complaints about the start time, it's the 30 mins to get to Potters Bar, an hour to Stevenage, and nearly two hours to Peterborough.

3 and a half hours up the ECML London to York with a Deltic certainly does seem - generous, shall we say? People complain sometimes about slow moving charter trains but half the time it's either because the timings are far too lax, or there's a delayed service train somewhere ahead!

Anyone who travels on charters regularly will not be remotely surprised at those timings. Charters come bottom of the pile for available paths and are timed accordingly. Anyone who expects anything like service train timings on a charter train is living in dreamland.

I think you're preaching in the wrong forum if you think you're teaching anybody around here about 'service train timings', but 1 hour to Stevenage and 2 hours to Peterborough is particularly slow - even by charter train standards. I've known steam hauled services get faster timings than that. Anyway, let's just rejoice at the fact we have a Deltic to go and watch. I'd rather see one with a slow timing than none at all.

The train is timed 1hr 47 min to reach Peterborough, an average speed of 43mph. In comparison, the LSL Saphos charter from High Wycombe to Kingswear, also running on Saturday (with a Class 47 as traction) is timed 67 min from High Wycombe to Oxford, a distance of 39 miles at an average speed of 35mph (although there are a couple of extra pick-up points in the Saphos schedule).

The Peterborough-York average speed works out at 63mph (with an allowance of 106 minutes for the 112 miles)! Nevertheless Saturday’s timings for this mid-section of the run are on par with the six hour schedules between Kings Cross and Edinburgh introduced in 1962, for Deltic haulage of some principal expresses.

I saw it go past north of doncaster this morning, seems equally it may have been held up for trespass incident just north of Donny. It and an azuma were both brought to a standstill either side of daw Lane crossing. Meant kids and I saw it building power back up

Why was this? It was advertised as Alycidon’s return to mainline running, hence some fare paying passengers (and photographers) would have expected the correct guise. Would have been nice to see a race horse running again….

Very slow timings of course, but recent outings have seen Deltics more often work on only one engine (or so it seems), so perhaps half power means poor pathing.

Deltics start on one engine, the second one only comes in (for traction, it is otherwise at idle) once the power handle is opened sufficiently.

This modification exists since the ETH conversions were made to give a more stable output voltage.

There's no better way too enjoy the sounds of a Deltic notching up than under the York train shed. I joined the hundreds here at York as 55009 (renumbered 55013) continues to Scarborough with the 07:52 Kings Cross - Scarborough "The Coronation Deltic".

And now the Newark thunderbird is on the move to Retford to drag the boat South. If its the Duff 47848 again then it's had a very busy three days rescuing stuff.
