I enjoy the occasional wee dram of scotch whisky - especially heavy-duty, smoky, peaty single malts from Islay.

The problem is I live in Australia and during the summer months, when temperatures can exceed 40°C for days on end, it's not conducive to sitting back with a neat whisky dreaming of the delicate twilight and salty atmosphere of a deserted Scottish beach.

The solution - only for emergency use during summer heatwaves, I emphasize - is a couple of scoops of vanilla ice cream in a bowl with a tot of Lagavulin 16-y.o. poured on top. Purists may fulminate, but the two go together well (I doubt it would work with lesser, non-Islay whiskies)

Nothing weird about that....especially in Calabria, where the local Nduja sausage is infused with dried red chillies and is considerably spicier than chorizo. ;)
Oooh now that sounds like reason enough to plan a future trip to Southern Italy!! :D

These aren't that weird but to make sandwiches slightly more interesting I love to mix either Peanut butter and chili sauce (a.k.a. satay) or Nutella and marmalade (a.k.a chocolate orange).

Getting into the realms of the really exotic....rye bread spread with quark (German almost zero-fat runny cream cheese) and topped with Kimchi (Korean spiced fermented vegetables). If no Kimchi available, sauerkraut is an acceptable - though less tasty - alternative.

I like apple sauce with chicken and meatballs. English mustard on a bacon sandwich, too.

My best friend adds gravy to just about anything. Fish and chips, pasta, rice, to name a few. He also adds cheese to chips and gravy.

My eldest goddaughter's girlfriend likes strawberry jam and Dairylea sandwiches. Apparently they're nice.

In Calabria I got confused with the Nduja, a spicy sausage, and the Ndrangheta, the mafia.

Peanut butter (crunchy) with mature cheddar, in brown bread. Amazing!
Funnily enough, I remember a story book we had when I was a very young lad (I believe it was one of the "Topsy & Tim" series, but might be wrong as it's been a while!) which mentioned someone having peanut butter and cornflake sandwiches. Inspired by this I managed to persuade my mum to make me these, and I remember enjoying them. The crunch of the cornflakes was very satisfying, though I would guess that if I'd had them in my packed lunch for school I'd have been disappointed as the cornflakes would have gone a bit soft in the four hours between preparation and consumption.

This nonsense of putting pineapple slices on pizza is a purely American idea

It was invented in Canada.

We could also just let people eat what they want rather than presenting some kind of weird faux-outrage at the supposedly shocking idea of putting something sweet on something which is normally savoury.

Err....this is supposed to be a light-hearted thread. Any items on here are posted in that spirit! (See the "Scones and the correct order of things" thread). ;)

I use mint sauce on roast beef and chicken as well as lamb. It actually works very well with them

Absolutely this

Who made the rules about what condiment goes with what meat anyway? Let people decide for themselves. Anything else is, er, condimental

Apropos mint sauce, and maybe something for another thread, when I was on my placement year from college I was once literally penniless for 48 hours before pay day. All I could eat was what was in the cupboard. So, mint sauce sandwich for four successive meals. Lovely

Hmmm now you have me wondering - what would a cornflake tart taste like using peanut butter instead of syrup to bind them together? Maybe one to try over the weekend!

Many many many many years ago myself and a friend tried cornflakes with cheese on toast, as in we put cornflakes on the toast along with the cheese and grilled it.
I don't recommend trying this at home, or anywhere else!
