Under no circumstances whatsoever would I be giving Musk any money, I'm afraid. And even if he didn't own it, they aren't particularly good cars for the price.

Tbf Musk only owns a relatively small percentage (13%?), as most of the shares are on the open market. And whilst Tesla maybe don’t always have the best build quality they do have an absolutely brilliant team of engineers working there who have produced the most (or at least up there) efficient electric cars, backed up with the extremely effective supercharger network that is fully integrated with the routing software. Unfortunately no other car manufacturer has even got close to this so I really don’t think it’s fair to claim they aren’t very good cars for the money. If someone is doing very long journeys regularly they really should consider them regardless of what they may or many not think of Musk (who is really just the slightly absent front/showman to the actual team getting on with the day job).

It's a used Tesla Model 3 long range. There are cheaper cars with similar range available, but the supercharger network swung it for me.
I do have charging at home yes.

@Bletchleyite Tesla are doing 0% finance ATM, check it out. I've never had to wait for a supercharger yet. On the one occasion they were all in use I just drove on to the next place.
Loads of Tesla and other chargers going in right now. There were at least 30 ready to be powered up at Exeter last week, big expansion happening at Rugby etc.
I have seen queues for the Tesla chargers at South Mimms on several occasions this year.

Which is exactly I got mine. The political views and life choices of employees and leaders of companies is of zero interest to me when I but stuff, but I realise that's different for other people.

On the other side of the M25 there's often at peak times a 30 min queue to get in to Cobham services (which I assume has chargers).
My MG4 trip to Cumbria reminds me how awful motorway services are and why I avoid them (in Ice cars).

Just like you'd better make sure you can get a decent broadband connection, either cable or FTTP. FTTC or similar isn't going to cut it (unless you're lucky enough to get the max possible speed from it).

Decent phone signal is another must-have these days.
There are EV charging supply equipment models with in-built SIMs, so installers will only need one or the other.

I was referring to people demanding good connectivity in a home, just as much as in the future they'll demand EV charging - so developers and landlords will have to seek to provide what customers want.

The Fremantle Highway has apparently caught fire due to an EV, reported by news outlets today.

The thermal runaway of EV batteries is a concern in the car industry.

Does anyone on this thread have concerns of fires with the EVs they own?

Strangely enough, there is hardly any talk in the news at the moment about the fact that the decks with the electric cars are largely undamaged and that these were therefore hardly the cause of the fire.

Doesn't matter now. The anti EV brigade are now telling people their cars are going to catch fire, make multi storey car parks collapse (forget the weight of the average luxury SUV) and are doing to massively depreciate.

It doesn't matter that all cars depreciate and it was only the chip shortage that allowed second hand cars, even luxury ICE vehicles, to sell at near-new prices and sometimes even for more.

That was never going to last forever!

Indeed.
Quite happy with the 2 EVs sat on my drive costing pennies to run.

Actually there's some advantages to there being a vocal group of people opposed to EV's, in that (at least whilst there's a chip shortage) whilst there's still demand for non EV cars, then EV's aren't getting more expensive than they are.

All used cars significant more expensive than they were 5 years ago due to the being far less choice. To illustrate this shot a year ago we went to a Ford dealer to look at a Galaxy. They had just two in stock, as part of a wider group they had several garages (not all Ford, but three of the group are) the group had a total of three (i.e. only one other) Ford Galaxies.

EV are a fire risk. Hard to put out.

Perhaps unsurprisingly it is looking increasing likely that the fire wasn’t caused by EVs… Shame that once again all that the FUD has been spread and the Daily Mail etc aren’t reporting this…

Well let’s hope the EV batteries maintain an excellent safety record. It would only take one major incident (no doubt sensationalized by the media) to jeopardise the industry. Thermal runway is not a small teething problem, it’s serious.

Petrol fires and explosions are serious too. Nothing that moves is 100% safe.

On Talk TV this morning, Julia Hartley-Brewer pointed out that she has a charging point right outside her house and it has not worked for 12 months.

I’ve corrected that for you. Did she present any evidence to go with this claim?

No she did not, but why would she make it up when it can easily be checked?

Assuming she lives in London and is referring to a lamppost charger (as you said it ‘was right outside her house’) I can currently only see one Ubitricity charger on Zap Map in London that is out of service (there may be more but that is all I can see with a quick scan). Perhaps this is hers but it was reported by a user as working last week. Of course it’s entirely possible that she may have another type of charger outside her house (or I’ve missed it) but it’s also possible that she perhaps made a ‘mistake’.

No but anyone living near her will.
Okay so anyone living near her (and who knows they do) will be able to see if it's currently in service. But for the vast majority of people who don't know where she lives, it's impossible to check.
why would she make it up
Because it's a nice sounding talking point that 99.9% of those listening to the program will be unable to check.

Because right-wing climate change deniers seem to like spreading nonsense and conspiracy about certain topics.

Without proof or background I doubt a lot of what I hear in the media and prefer to do my own research and make my own mind up. As I say, it's almost impossible to verify the claim so of course I doubt it.

So-called "right-wing climate change deniers" would say the exact same thing! ;)

Why would you doubt her?

She isn’t a public service news presenter but is a columnist employed by a media organisation that has a very strong bias (and its sister company in the US still appears to openly support one Donald Trump), and has herself a very long history of climate denial. Can you not see how all this starts to add up? It worries me that you seem to be fully prepared to willingly accept something she claims as fact, without at least acknowledging she might be creating a talking point.

She seems to talk a lot of sense to me as does Talk TV as a whole.
As for public service, remember the rubbish the BBC spouted during covid.

The last time I went to fill my car up, one of the petrol pumps was out of order. Things break from time to time and just because one charger is claimed not to be working, doesn't mean that the whole idea of running electric cars is suddenly unworkable.

No I don’t. And the BBC are not the only public service broadcaster in the UK.

Quite. Regardless of whether JHB’s claim is true or otherwise, it’s hardly a reason not to buy an EV.

Come off it, the BBC acted appallingly during the pandemic. Perhaps they had to toe the line; that’s their only possible defence.

Talk TV have absolutely no obligation to serve the public, present balance or facts, or act impartially. TalkTV exist purely to serve their commercial interests. When @greyman42 says they ‘talk a lot of sense to me’ I say don’t live in your echo chamber, open your eyes and ears, and employ a bit of critical thinking.

It not only serves commercial interests, it was set up by Murdoch to promote his right wing political agenda, aping Fox News in the US. Factual or impartial analysis are not a priority for either of them, or indeed any other Murdoch mouthpiece.
