Also a pair for AERE Harwell.
I think it was two pairs - all four ended up with Berrys of Taunton with a couple seeing service with First

The last 2 VRs built eventually ended up with crosville cymru as EVG49 and EVG 50,the only time EVG was used for double deckers.Think they ended their days based at Aberystwyth depot.

I concur... I was at uni in Aber from 91 to 95 and definitely went on one or both of these on a number of occasions. They had high back seats hence the E for express. Was a great time to be there... VRs, Leopards and Nationals.
UVT49X and PFA50W were new to Stevos for the Burton to Birmingham service (I think) and so had high backed seats. After passing to Midland Fox, they did indeed move within Drawlane to Crosville Wales at Aber; I remember seeing one at Machynlleth outbase c.1995, and yes, they were the only ones in Crosville to have the EVG designation.

Some interesting replies, I hadn't realised that Midland Red didn't have any new - presumably they were wedded to the Fleetline..

They were buying fleetlines from 1963 until 1970 - i.e. up to early NBC days. After that, they had a couple more years of Leopards and then Nationals until Olympians except a batch of Atlanteans ordered but diverted to London Country and two Fleetlines ordered by Harpers.

Midland Red did not have any VRs delivered new.

Only when Oswestry, Macclesfield and Crewe depots of Crosville were folded into Midland Red North were there significant VRs wearing some sort of Midland Red fleetname. Midland Red West had a couple on loan at Redditch c.1987, and there were a few in Leicester (but that was in Midland Fox days).

If you want a bus operating NBC firm that didn't operate VRs.... then suggest Shamrock and Rambler. Of course, a predominantly coach operator, they did operate minibuses (and Nationals in its last Drawlane days) but not deckers
If I recall Crewe and Macclesfield had no VRs when split as Midland Red North

As I recall Midland Red kept buying Leopards for their inter urban express routes - but obviously used all over the place- until probably the late 1970s but also loads of Nationals. Didn’t they also buy those horrible Fords? They certainly had an aversion to double deckers and I don’t think they bought any more until the company was split into four.

If you go back to the early days of NBC there would be quite a few operating bus companies that didn't take VRTs or VRLs: Tynemouth, Tyneside, Gateshead, Sunderland District, Venture, Hebble, County, Mexborough & Swinton, Thomas Bros, Rhondda, United Welsh, Neath & Cardiff, Stratford Blue.

I think Aldershot & District might have missed-out before its merger with Thames Valley, and possibly the two Bath companies before their absorption by Bristol, and Notts & Derby before its absorption by Midland General. I'm not confident about any of these though. Nor the original Wilts & Dorset - if it did take VRs it might have been just a trading name of Hants & Dorset by then, which I think took place towards the end of the THC era.

Standerwick is an odd one, a coaching company that did take VRs for coaching work.

Lost somewhere within Bank-Monument tube station,
From memory, Bristol City and Oxford were the only subsidiaries to take dual-door centre staircase VRs, which had a much more well-proportioned upper deck interior compared to the standard lowheight.

A bit of shame there was never a Y-reg or A-reg Bristol VR given that the Atlantean and Fleetline made it (although only just in the case of the Fleetline!), but I guess the Olympian production line was already in full swing by late 1981.

Southdown also had many dual-door, centre staircase VRs

A Y reg Fleetline? I'm pretty sure the last ones were on an X suffix?

SCH 117X for South Notts in fact?

Crewe had three VRs - DVG471/478/484 that had been there for several years

They bought numbers of Marshall bodied Leopards for bus work in the late 60s/early 70s and into the National era. They continued to buy them with a bus shell but high backed seats until moving to coach shells for DP work in 1975.

Harper Bros had a pair of ECW Fleetlines, and ordered a further pair that were delivered in 1976 to Midland Red.

Not the last registered. Cleveland Transit had a number of chassis stored and bodied later as YAJ154-157Y.

In addition, the weird Ensign DMS rebuilds from the early 1980s somehow ended up getting A-reg and B-reg plates, meaning technically Fleetlines got further than VRs on the numberplate system (despite the chassis being from the early 1970s!).

Anyway we'll be accused of the heinous crime of being off-topic if we continue! The last NBC VR was Eastern Counties VR294 (VEX294X), which is fortunately still with us in preservation. That being said, the VEX-X batch went as far as VR304 so I'm not sure why VR294 gets that distinction.

Eastern National's last batch of VRs ended up on XHK-X plates, which gave an interesting comparison as their first trio of ECW Olympians were also on XHK-X plates (and may well have been planned to be built as VRs in the first place, might be worth an investigation if they were supposed to be VRs or planned as Olympians from the get-go). You can really see the VR/ECW lineage in those first three Olympians.

Three more come to mind: how could I overlook the original North Western? - 25 were on order at the time the company was divided, but were delivered after the split to SELNEC Cheshire, with various SELNEC features; Wakefields; and - a bit obscure this one, but it did own buses (the NBC-owned buses in the Halifax/Todmorden/Calderdale, Huddersfield, and Sheffield JOCs and the entirety of the Sheffield "C" fleet - the first Amalgamated Passenger Transport.

There were definitely some NBC depots that didn't get VRs

I would say quite a lot, for VR operators - if you take into account those depots that closed in the dark days of 1970-71. Even then there will still be quite a few. Off the top of my head I can think of: Ribble at Ulverston, Grange-over-Sands, Liverpool, Bury, and Skipton; Yorkshire at Bradford and Liversedge; West Yorkshire at Grassington, Ilkley, Pateley Bridge, Scarborough, and Wetherby; Lincolnshire at Goole; Western Welsh/Crosville at Newcastle Emlyn and New Quay, and Western Welsh at Carmarthen - and did Western Welsh/South Wales ever operate VRs from Haverfordwest?; Western Welsh/National Welsh from Brecon, and I'd be surprised if Red & White/National Welsh at Abergavenny wasn't entirely single-deck by the NBC years - the Red & White/National Welsh garage at Cardiff Gelligaer Street, being a coach garage only. never saw a VR; and London Country's small allocation of VRs only operated from Grays, so you can add every other London Country garage onto the list.

Who operated buses on the Isle of Wight? Was it Hants & Dorset or a separate company?

No, it was/is Southern Vectis - a separate NBC company but now under common ownership with Wilts & Dorset as part of the Go Ahead group.

Midland Red (South) was another part of the old company that operated VRs. This was from the mid 1990's well after production had finished. Initially some came in 1993 whilst MR(S) was under Western Travel ownership, then from 1994 after Stagecoach had taken over more came into the fleet.

Out of the original 'Big 3' rear-engined double-deck chassis designs, only the Atlantean got beyond A-reg outside of major rebodying efforts like those Ensign DMS Fleetlines. One Merseyside example (B296 KWM/1070), one Fylde example (B75 URN/75) and two Blackpool examples (B363-364 UBV/363-364), all 4 being registered in September/October 1984. The Fylde example was the last Atlantean to be registered in the UK from new (barring any rebodies) as far as I can tell. But these weren't the last UK 'Attys' by chassis number, as that honour went to two Lancaster examples (A214 MCK/214 & A223 MCK/223) registered that July.

But this is a topic best served by a seperate thread, so I'll stop dragging this one off-topic any further!

Being pedantic Shamrock and Rambler operated Metroliner double deck coaches and a couple of Bristol FLFs as training vehicles (not at the same time).

That is impressive pedantry :D Sorry - double deck buses, though the Lodekkas weren't in passenger service.

All four bus operating Midland Red firms operated VRs at various times but obviously, none from new.
There's a picture or two in a Buses Annual... I seem to remember them in green and yellow maybe with Northern Counties bodies.
They were indeed bodied by Northern Counties

I'm fairly certain that some of those will have operated VRs - Ribble (Ulverston), National Welsh (Abergavenny and Brecon), Crosville at Newcastle Emlyn, and West Yorkshire at Wetherby, whilst South Wales had quite a few delivered new to Haverfordwest carrying the Cleddau local name.

Yes, definitely some at Haverfordwest. Remembered this on a 1983 timetable:

Most of the bus fleet was VRs in the early/mid 1980s with a few Olympians and a relatively small single deck fleet of Nationals and LHSs.
Three of the Southern Vectis VRs were sold to Lowland in 1990-91 - 650/5/6 (MDL650R, NDL655/6R). The last one is preserved as Lowland 856 and still has its Southern Vectis fleetnumber at the foot of the stairs, which its owners have retained as a nod to its past.
