Bit of an odd one this. Can Ticket Office staff find better deals on tickets that aren't available online, i.e I have been told that cancelled tickets could be sold off for cheaper than the advertised fare by ticket office staff. That fares can be reduced at short notice and only said Ticket Office staff would be aware as they wouldn't appear on online sites.
Is this true or as I suspect not true?

There are a very tiny number of tickets like rovers and rangers which aren't available online and only available at ticket offices, but in general the clerk was talking nonsense.

Nonsense.

Also balderdash.

Excellent service again by the ticket office I see.

The OP did not say who had told them this, just that they had been told.

In short...no. Other than Rovers and Rangers which are generally not sold online, and obscure stuff like SailRail.
Irish SailRail is quite widely available online, the Trainline app handles it easily enough.

I suspect you'd have more issues at a ticket office than online these days. I'd like to see the reaction from a London Overground or Merseyrail station!

Netherlands SailRail is handled by the Stena Line website.

IOM works when there is availability.

A significant number of the most common ranger and rover tickets are now online.

Plusbus online.

London / International CIV online.

Sleepers online.

Staff Travel online (mandatory in some cases)

Railcards all major ones online - some regional ones are now online like Devon and Cornwall. Rest to follow.

If anything, a ticket office can be more expensive as certain tickets are no longer able to be retailed by them, and are wholly online or TVM only, such as some Advance fares or promotions.

Other than excess fares, platform tickets and very odd/rare supplements, you'd at least want to compare prices online before using a ticket office.

A Facebook spat with someone whose 'friend' works in a ticket office apparently, they didn't like being called out on it being a load of tripe so I thought I best check, they tried to insist it was like airlines who sell off cancelled seats at next to nothing, laughable in itself as airlines generally don't have walk on passengers.

Some TOCs do sell off the excess capacity at the last minute for an attractive fare, but it's most definitely online only and even then only for a very limited number of (for now) Avanti trains.

Airliines will often sell cancelled seats at a massive premium if someone is in a rush to get the next plane somewhere and the plane was previously full.

Also advance tickets for the same day can’t be sold by Northern ticket offices but can be bought online. So higher prices (potentially) from the ticket office than online. I can buy a £3:50 single online to Manchester but will have to pay something like £7:10 at the station - the ticket office might guide me towards a day return which might be the best option of course.

Don’t they do this already? It’s called overbooking, I’ve been bumped off a couple of times and the incentives are with the minor inconvenience!

Historically scheduled airlines sold more seats on a specific flight than the flight had capacity for because they could estimate the number of booked passengers who would not turn up. These typically would be passengers with a flexible ticket who would make more than one reservation and could "no show" without penalty. The airlines kept very detailed records and thus could estimate reasonably accurately where and how many "no shows" would occur. However with the move towards selling a greater number of less flexible tickets on a flight the practice of overbooking has become less prevalent but still exists.

Edit. The fare for a walk up passenger who hasnt booked but then purchasing a seat which becomes available is usually the full economy fare which like rail fares is very high compared to the huge range of cheaper tickets which have been sold. Cheap stand bys have all but disappeared because (a) flyers eventually learned how to game the system to their advantage (b) it created some customer relations issues.

Since Merseyrail place so much store on ticket officesbeing the only optiin, it would be very good if multiple people pressured them with more obscure options like this,

I wouldn't really accept London Boundary Zone tickets as obscure.

If they are obscure it's partly because they're hard to get hold of, not solely because people don't want to buy them (or wouldn't want to buy them if they knew they existed).

Just went on the forum's site and would make two points:

(1) you can't just type in "boundary zone 6" as the origin in the same way as you'd go into a ticket office and ask for a return from boundary zone 6 to wherever
(2) if you go into the advanced options, specify you already hold a z1-6 travelcard and ask for a return from a station inside the zones to one outside (I used SGR to MAI for my search), it returns an error message.

Not saying it's impossible to get them online, necessarily, but it's not very easy. There are an awful lot more sites that don't sell them than sites that do. "Readily available online" is a real stretch.

Seems like the journey planner went down. Unrelated to your specific search query.

Yeah, it's not a TVM. It plans journeys to/from physical stations according to timetabled services & fixed links. Asking for the fare specifically requires knowledge of what they are, in any case.

It seems to be related to my specific search query.

The forum's website happily return results for the journey SGR to MAI but returns an error if you specify in the advanced options that you already hold a travelcard.

I then thought maybe I'd try specifying a different station and see if that works, so tried Ealing Broadway to Maidenhead, and the result is even worse - it offers the point-to-point ticket even if you specify you hold a 1-6 travelcard despite the fact this costs more than the boundary zone ticket.

If that's the experience on what I consider to be one of the best, if not the best, online ticket retailer, it speaks volumes.

If an Advance fare is cancelled, it will go back into the system for all retailers to issue tickets.

Can you please provide more information, including the date, times of travel, any Railcards held, and screenshots please? This would help us greatly to investigate the matter. Thanks :)

It may not be the person in the ticket office making this up; it may be their friend. But for sure, this claim is false.

This can be helpful for those needing to plan a journey although most of us on here simply want to buy a ticket quickly without an itinerary. Could you possibly look at putting this functionality onto your website please? Using the favourite journey option on the Southern website is the only way to do this that I know of - which doesn't provide great splits like your site does!

Can you send a screenshot of the search? I've tried a few times to reproduce this without success. What travelcard type are you picking? The Anytime one?

Date and time as per the first screenshot. All queries with Network Railcard.

Query 1 was Slade Green to Maidenhead, which returns the off-peak day return if no travelcard held or the error message as per the second screenshot if an off-peak z1-6 is specified.

Query 2 was Ealing Broadway to Maidenhead which returns the off-peak day return even if an off-peak z1-6 travelcard is specified.

If you're saying that you need to know the boundary station then the tickets are available anywhere

Anywhere online, yes, although the validity might be different and the ticket from the last station in the relevant zone on the particular route you want to take (if, indeed, you know at the time of purchase which route you'll want to take) may be more expensive than the boundary zone fare. E.g. London to Dorking via Redhill.

Ticket machines are just a lottery. Maybe they'll sell them, maybe they won't. Maybe you'll be leaving before 12 but not crossing the zone boundary until after 12, so want an evening out return. Many machines will let you specify a future date and time but not a later time the same day. Ticket office clerks can (usually) be reasoned with in this situation. TVMs can't.
