Leeds - Lancaster - Carlisle - Leeds

After reading the top ten lines thread, and bearing in mind we are going to Leeds soon, what would be the best tickets to do a round trip from Leeds to Leeds via the Lancaster line and back via the Settle and Carlisle (or vice versa)?

As an example, leaving Leeds at 1019 and arriving at Lancaster at 1211, then whizzing up to Carlisle in time for the 1505 or 1618 back down to Leeds would be a good day out, allowing the S&C and the Leeds to Lancaster trip.

Haven't checked the RG, but perhaps Leeds-Kendal?

Should be valid via Skipton in one direction and via Carlisle on the return...

You'd have to check because I'm not 100% on validity through Carlisle, but I would be surprised if it wasn't seeing as there is a route Skipton ticket.

I'm not sure if any of the Northern rovers apart from the NW one cover both the S+C and the WCML to get to Carlisle. Might be worth having a look. As for a normal Leeds - Carlisle ticket I'm sure you know you can have either route Appleby and route Any Permitted so at a guess I'd say the Any Permitted is valid via Lancaster (seems the logical other route for me, but best to check with the routeing guide).

EDIT: Just checked the Cumbria Day Ranger and it is only valid after Skipton - so probably looking at just getting normal tickets and looking for a splitting point on route.

The Freedom of North West doesn't really cover S+C

The Freedom of North East doesn't cover Lancaster.

I've had a look, and unless I've missed something, it seems no rovers cover both lines.

I'm going to have a look at Leeds - Kendal now, cheers First Class!

I've looked again, and the North West round robin is £32 - this includes Leeds - Preston, leeds - Carnforth and Leeds - Carlisle as well as the WCML.

Looks like that's the official way to do it...if someone can come up with anything cheaper that would be fantastic!

Yes it does, see this map. But it is available only in 7-day and 4-days-in-8 versions and probably isn't best for a good day out.

The Freedom of North West rovers do. But the OP wants a day trip. The North West Round Robin allows the itinerary specified and costs £32 adult, £21.10 railcard, £16 child. It is slightly cheaper than a Leeds - Carlisle route Appleby return with an excess to travel out by route Any Permitted, and significantly cheaper than a Leeds - Oxenholme or Leeds - Penrith return.

Yes, it is a very good day out. I recommend the North West Round Robin. You can read more about it in Northern's Explore the North West booklet.

Remember that there is a fair bit of engineering work going on at the South end of the Cumbrian coast route at the moment so you will not be able to go the full route, especially at weekends.

I suggest you check with the Virgin website too, Greenback, if you're planning this trip on a Saturday, as there seems to be bustitution between Preston/Lancaster and Carlisle from midday Saturday most weekends through to the end of May.
It would be a shame to end up on a bus up the M6

It would be a great shame, and defeat one of the main purposes of the trip, which is for Mrs Greenback to travel on a Pendolino for the first time!

I'm afraid I haven't got access to The Manual as I am mobile, but why not split at Keighley or Skipton? A KEI / SKI - CAR Rte Any Permitted is valid via Lancaster and Appleby from memory, and may work out cheaper.
