Hello Train Travellers,

I hope some of you can help. Yesterday evening we caught a TransPennine Express train from Edinburgh to Leeds and was told due to industrial action we were to leave the train at Newcastle and catch an LNER train to York and then change trains again in York for the final leg to Leeds. Despite the fact that we had paid tickets to Leeds, we were required to pay for the Newcastle to York stage by LNER. We didn't complete the final leg by train as a friend I was travelling with arranged for someone to collect us by car.

What is the best way to get compensation for the delayed and chaotic journey and the extra fares demanded by LNER?

Who advised you to catch the lner service?

There's a similar situation on tonight and they are advising to use next tpe service or northern, so assuming it was same last night it may play a part who advised you to use lner instead

It was announced on the TPE train when we were leaving Edinburgh that we would need to get on the LNER train in Newcastle. On the way in to Newcastle station, it was announced that we would be stopping at Platform 3 and the LNER train which was behind us would be stopping at Platform 4. It's possible I got the 3 and 4 the wrong way round.

The ticket inspector on the LNER train said they used to accept TPE tickets but no longer accept them.

Are TPE and LNER not near enough the same company now?
No, they are both OLR but they are separate OLR companies. It's not the same as the GTR situation where it's different brands of the same company.

LNER are wrong for charging here and they should be contacted to submit a complaint, asking for the cost of the new ticket to be reimbursed.

Whilst the LNER member of staff was correct insofar as there is no longer 'standing' ticket acceptance on LNER for TPE only ticket holders in the event of a TPE cancellation, it does get arranged in individual cases. That was evidently the case here - the guard on the TPE service wouldn't have advised this otherwise - and so they had no right to charge anything.

Of course, you should also claim Delay Repay, assuming you got to your final destination 15+ minutes late.
