I nearly didn't notice this! Presumably you chose an Arctic island (as opposed to Canvey Island ) because I couldn't be certain where to find you?

Actually, I have to confess, as much as I dislike 323s, they should be simple enough to drive. If I can safely drive an HST (admittedly in a simulator) then a 323 shouldn't be too hard to learn. I could then run wherever I pleased (to a point; no Inverness for instance and no Bath for the moment either), set up one carriage as a "home", and then charge people to travel in the other two carriages. How does that sound for an Open Access operation? A fairly simple but currently unused route (not Walsall to Wolverhampton though!) that wouldn't be hit hard by abstraction tests, and then prevent people from accessing one of the end carriages?

I think he chose the Arctic island rather than Canvey Island because one of these places is a desolate, inhospitable, windswept wasteland, and the other is not far from the North Pole and populated largely by polar bears.

I think in this day and age, on the railway you could probably afford a plastic yellow Glasdon bin with that.

But if I did have a substantial sum of money I would probably rebuild Llangollen-Ruabon, and destroy that rubbish hotel thats in the way by the River Dee.

Having inherited £20 million and there being so many obvious ways of spending it, I would like to spend some of it on some of our stations with my donation being matched penny for penny by Network Rail and Local PTEs etc...

But not before buying large numbers of shares in a certain transport company!

Hmmm, in that case, my rail-related twenty mill would go on:

1) Quit job. Get on long-distance train. Wait until 5 minutes after departure. Pull communication cord. Wait for arrival of angry guard. Nod as he fines me £500. Hand it over. Smile sweetly and point out I've got time and money on my side. Wait for train to restart. Wait 5 minutes - and repeat... etc. etc.

2) Walk smartly up to ticket office at large station. Put down large bag of cash and beam."Morning - twenty million platform tickets, please!"

If i was allowed more than 20 mil, say at least 50mil, then id put a lot of money into both the Wensleydale and Waverley routes. Get them both fully reopened, and at a decent speed.
Buy a few locos. Mainly 47s. Get them mainline certified, and refurbed up to a very high standard. I want reliable locos!
Then sit back and enjoy a few railtours behind my own locos, and running over the Wensleydale and Waverley!!
