Just posted on Lothian's Facebook page:

Will be interesting to see if the vintage buses come back. I'm not sure if that'll be the case.
Just saw it on Instagram too

A date for your diaries...

September! We'll be throwing open the garage doors here in Annandale Street to showcasw what we do - and how we do it! - 365 days a year across Edinburgh and the Lothians.

More details will follow... watch this space
It would be nice for the vintage bus runs to come back but I’m not sure how that works in terms of legislation and the fact that the company is publicly owned, it may be seen as going against their Net Zero targets.

Brilliant news! Must try to get back to Auld Reekie for it. There's a hint of vintage buses running. It says 'further info in due course. Keep your eyes peeled!'

I did see a vintage red bus at Longstone engineering earlier this week (from the public road).

This will have been one of many based at Newbridge available for Wedding Hire. Although a few of the full open top ones have made an appearance at the back of Marine recently.

846 has now also moved confirming it's at least 841-846 moving across, likely the full batch at this point. 844s tracker is frozen so you wouldn't be able to tell if it's moved.

I think they'll probably do it, if it's for one day.

Just a few thoughts from recent observations:

1. The 22 seems to be relatively quiet still since its extension to Granton. Not so sure if it has attracted more passengers but I feel like single deckers are sufficient for the route. Would it be better if it serves Stockbridge?

2. The 30 continues to be not so reliable and lots of delays/doubling up. Cutting it to QMU doesn't seem to help. While on Sundays only the 48 serving between Fort Kinnaird and Musselburgh giving an impression that it is well used but it's a big reduction compared to when 30 served along there. Not so sure what the next step should be.

3. The 26 seems to be doubling up even more these days, especially with the diversion at Haymarket. It continues to be really busy and it does deserve more buses into the route. I think it used to be every 7/8 minutes? Just thinking if it worths a regular part route between Drum Brae South and Musselburgh/Levenhall (say 1x part route + 1x Tranent + 1x Seton Sands every 20/25 minutes to a combined 7-9 min service?).

4. Should the 26/44 goes along Leith Street and London Road instead. Leopold Place used to be a big stop for the 26. And now going down Leith Street doesn't take too much longer (compared to the 4/5 it's probably just taking 2 minutes more most of the time). Then it can stop outside St James Quarter instead of Apple Store (which cause congestion at that stop a lot of the time). It doesn't have to stop all 4 stops on London Road until Abbeyhill but maybe just Leopold Place then Abbeyhill?

5. 124/X5. The X5 is an express but it might only take 15 minute less than the 124 max and it does not operate on Sunday. Sometimes I feel like it's not that well used. and between North Berwick and Seton it's an uneven 15/15/30 minute service. Not so sure if the X5 is operating in a profit of if it's better to put those buses to the 124 for a more frequent services (say 20 min), with the 124 terminating on Frederick Street, not stopping at Wallyford etc. to save some time.

6. Portobello. The 19 is picking up some passengers but it seems that most people are sticking to the 26 given it's more direct. Would it be better to bring the 124 back to Portobello but with limited stops (Fisherrow - Coillesdene Drive - Portobello Town Hall - King's Road - Meadowbank). It could potentially be even faster than the current route given the road is quieter along there and there are quite a few junctions on the current route. The limited stops on the 113/124 aren't usually much faster between Meadowbank House and Musselburgh - it's obvious when there's a 44 in front of it. It can't even catch up until Meadowbank House sometimes. The 26 is only a lot slow than the 44 between Musselburgh and Meadowbank only because of changing drivers and more time buffer on the timetable on the 26 in Portobello area (sometimes stopping along because it's early)

7. Stops along Princes Street.
(A) The stop outside Apple Store is always a nightmare, especially when all the buses are sticking together. Even buses not stopping there are being blocked. Should the EastCoastBuses route stop at the front of the bus stop or moved slightly futher and Lothian routes at the back so that they can pick up passengers at the same time?
(B) The 1, 16, 25, 34, 124 stopping at Waverley Steps and Scott Monument. The stops are so close together but then the 25 can really pick up lots of passengers both stops and it doesn't make sense to cancel the stop at Scott Monument as the 3/33 stops there too. It's a dilemma but it does need some changes imo.

Just thinking to post a thread with all these and see what everyone thinks.

I'd wager that if the Livingston transfers are to be put to use it'll likely be some sort of service increase on the X27/X28, or something of that nature.

The X18 is pretty busy edinburgh to Uphall, I was thinking of a X17 perhaps if they could get the frequency to match

Sorry to change the subject slightly: is it possible to find out the timing points of a particular route (I'm assuming the timing point locations are fixed and do not change per journey)? Are they just the default locations which come up on Bustimes before you click "show all stops"?

Usually yes. Although there no doubt will be exceptions.

Generally the places listed on Lothian’s PDF version of the timetables are also the timing points, but I’d be reluctant to confirm that this is the case for them all. No doubt someone in the know would be able to confirm.

Thanks both, that's fine, it was just a rough idea I was after.

I think the 22 is quiet just now because of the holidays. When the college goes back, the service will be busy again. I have also noticed that the 113 and 124 take the same time as the 44. I'm not sure what can be done about this. I was recently on a 113 and the traffic lights kept turning red. The 44 in front rather annoyingly kept getting the green lights! The 26 could indeed be increased in frequency, but end to end, not just over a certain section. Levenhall was used as a turning point for that service some time ago. As for the 30, make that a double deck route, operating via A1 between Fort and the university. The evoras could be used on the 46 and 48 and 176 - 190 could go back to West Lothian for another attempt. The frequencies for most services could do with being increased, if the resources are there

176-190 have just been repainted and if Evoras were to be used on the 46/48, keeping half of them at Longstone would prove handy for the 36 and 38. If the Evoras go anywhere, it would most likely be to Central.

split them between the 3 depos?
The only reason that was done before with the B7RLE's was because they were ready for the 46/48 but it didn't launch by them. It would be really impractical to split them between the 3 depots when there are only 30. The best plan of action is to either keep them all at Longstone and give Central their 7900's or give Central some Evoras. Anything else would probably be stupid.

There was a fairly lengthy local campaign to restore the X5 post-COVID so I don't think this would go down well

Full and standing on the citybound journey arriving just after 12 on Friday. Conversely yesterday (Saturday) fairly sparse. No more than 12 on the journey outside the city boundary i.e. a fair number of additional people using it for faster journeys to and from Jewel, Paisley Drive etc.

It's only been two months since that last round took effect. Outside of COVID, there never really was multiple big changes in a year, so it'll be a while yet I'd imagine.

The extra journeys on the 25 were withdrawn for the holidays, so I would imagine they would be reinstated around September.

Lothian did specify on their page for the previous service change that these would be reinstated in September. No updated registration to confirm this thus far though.

How far in advance do changes need to be registered?
Maybe they're just planning on running duplicates on the 25 during term-time.
If it was me I'd be using XLBs on the 25, assuming they're not needed elsewhere compared with a standard-length bus.

Longstone runs the Service 25, and that would just be a hastle for services that need it, although you did say if they're not needed anywhere, they will be.

They could run duplicates at the start but for the other universities they would have to do the same.
