I need a good red pen day in Cheshire again, to rope in some of the 3 coach units. Shame Chester - Frodsham is a margin short of 10 miles [something like 9 miles 78 chains]

I was thinking much the same, two of them scored in one day as well!

I think I was lucky with the 230s. Knowing they are unreliable I wasn't expecting to get any.
230009 might have failed and been replaced by 007 as 009 was showing for all my trips on RTT but 007 showed up in the afternoon.

Everything was running 20 minutes late on the Bidston to Wrexham line during the afternoon and a cancellation around 18:00, coupled with heavy rain meant I missed out on a couple of stations.
I was going to walk from Caergwrle to Hope and head back down to Chirk but time and weather put a stop to that.

I managed to squeeze the remaining miles out of 112 on Thursday between WBQ and ERL.

Some people set a minimum mileage for each unit - just an extra challenge to keep things interesting, particularly if ones regular journey is a short distance or there is a choice of unit to travel in.

Ah I see. 10 miles doesn't seem like much of a challenge - when I was 'bashing' locos a 'clearance' was generally taken to mean 1,000 miles although that would take some serious commitment if you wanted 'a grand' off every EMU, DMU etc.

I certainly wouldn't want to have to do 1000 miles per unit on the London Overground. Even ten is a struggle there!

Yes, I mean I personally just have to travel on a train and for it to move to have had it, and the only attention I pay to mileage is if I've been over 100 miles on it I make a note on the side. I don't look for a unit I've already been on if it gets renumbered either, because I've already been on that train and it's the same physical train.

9 days away on a two-legged trip taking in Germany and (for the first time) Finland. Winners had were as follows; as usual only locos and power cars count, DMUs and EMUs not being allowed.

For the first time I didn’t score any DB 101s, a reflection on their run down, but very surprised to pick up four “Trabants” on S-Bahn and RE duties. The “Bahn Expert” site was absolutely invaluable in finding required traction in Germany.

Agreed, especially with the DC only units. Same with Merseyrail units as those services can be slow due to the many stations.

If you’re saying you have to travel on the unit providing power, then by the same logic most of your loco haulages are also fudging as you weren’t on the loco.

Not that I do such a thing, just popped into the head. I will note a DVT if it's remembered, just out of sheer novelty, but I won't make a special effort to do so. The primary time I will make a note of the DVT is when I need to find it to load a cycle!

After cutting my walk short at Ware due to the adverse weather, I got lucky with a required 720 on the next Stratford train and when in that area [after an airport 745 to Liverpool Street] decided to have a couple of hours on the Overground as they were running in pairs today (but not a full service as there wasn't any Chingford services). Also finally got a sub mile Piccadilly Line 73 stock on a required move from Hyde Park Corner to Turnpike Lane [to connect with a bus to Waltham Cross], my luck with that line is terrible.

484003 and 484005 were helpfully diagrammed on the Isle of Wight today so I was able to complete the 484 fleet for riding.

A shame the Island Line isn't 10 miles long though.

Have you considered repeated Chester to Flint trips on a North Wales two zone rover (zones F and W)? That, coupled with a Merseytravel Saveaway probably covers a good day's bashing round there. 12 and a bit miles from Chester to Flint.

Same with Merseyrail units as those services can be slow due to the many stations.

Annoying there that Sandhills to Aughton Park just comes up short of 10 miles if trying to get the six 777 workings on the Ormskirk branch.

Depends what the connection time is like at Flint. I'm trying to avoid doing endless Piccadilly - Airport leaps as that line gets boring quite quickly, but isn't the worst idea as I believe F + W is also valid Chester - Wrexham.
