Those aren't advances, just a 20% discount when you buy on their website. Several other TOCs offer similar deals.

Is this for any journey, i tried buying a single from Strood to Dartford travelling Thursday about 11 and it only offers the fare i usually pay with my 16-25 railcard.

Why does it not take the discount off.

It hasn't started yet, as clearly shown on the linked page:

From 9 April - 2 May you can save 20% on standard Off-Peak tickets when you buy online. Tickets are available to buy now

It's for any journey on the specified ticket types where the outbound leg is taken between 9th April and 2nd May (and is exclusively on Southeastern services and not entirely within the London fare zones). Are you booking within those dates?

It seems to discount only these suggested journeys and not much else:

London to Canterbury £25.40 £20.35 saving £5.05
London to Tunbridge Wells £16.20 £13.00 saving £3.20
London to Bearsted £18.60 £14.90 saving £3.70
Maidstone to London £18.10 £14.50 saving £3.60
Chatham to London £16.20 £13.00 saving £3.20
Tonbridge to London £14.10 £11.30 saving £2.80

Like the majority of things they do, it's weak and not up to much. Unfortunately, their franchise has now been extended to March 2014. Oh Joy!

No, those are just examples. It is for any off-peak tickets wholly on Southeastern during the period of the offer. It's obviously aimed at families because the period covers the Easter school holiday and the long weekend immediately following it. I'd say it's a pretty good deal myself.

I've found plenty of availability on various random journeys, including London Cannon Street to Battle, Stone Crossing to Dartford, Bat and Ball to West St. Leonards, Sevenoaks to Deal, and Maidstone to London Charing Cross. What does not seem to work is any ticket to or from a station in the London fare zones except for London Terminals, which is different from the advertisement that says it's allowed on tickets that are not wholly within the London fare zones. This is quite annoying for me as any journey I would be making and hoping to get the reduction on would be originating within the London fare zones but not at London Terminals.

It would be useful if the OP or a moderator could retitle this thread though, these are not 'Advance' fares, as you've pointed out already...

It's offering me nothing for my local, Folkestone Central. Cheapest return to London is still £20 yet it has discounted a similar ticket from Dover.

I have looked at my normal journey - Dover Priory to St Pancras return.
On a Saturday £34.30 (£22.65 with a Network Railcard).

With the 20% discount it is £27.45
When you add the Network Railcard the fare reduces to £12.25 which is obviously much more than 20%!

Hopefully this links works to explain myself.
Perhaps this should be kept secret from Southeastern & I'd have no problem if this entry was deleted.;)

PS, thank you for thread title correction.

South Eastern remains the TOC that value for money forgot.

On the website it now says:
Southeastern said:
You can buy the discounted Off-Peak tickets for travel to and from anywhere on our network excluding London Zones 1-6.
which to me seems to indicate what you say is happening

Can you use a railcard with this offer?

My usual fare GLM - DFD Off peak return is 5.15 with the 20% discount it is 4.10. I have selected my 16-25 railcard but it has not taken off anymore than the 20%.

Is it just 20% off the fare i usually pay or should it be 54% (20% online discount plus railcard discount) off of £5.15

Most of the Southeastern website seems to be down, but the journey planner is available. I've tried a journey I'm making next week and it accepted family and friends railacrd with web discount. Are you trying to use the 16-25 railcard too early in the morning? Or is £5.15 the usual railcard discounted fare?

The discounted fare is £5.15, so am i correct to assume i will just get 20% off that. Not an additional 34% off.

Well I'm confused. According to NRE/SET the off-peak return from GLM to DFD is £6.80, or £4.50 with a railcard. This is further reduced on SET website to £3.60 with the 20% web discount. I can't see your £5.15 fare at all.

Note: the earliest train you can use the railcard on is the 1024.

I don't get this. GLM (Gillingham) - DFD (Dartford) does not have an Off Peak Return fare according to AvantixT. The full-price CDR (Off Peak Day Return) is £6.80. With 20% discount it should be £5.45. If you have a railcard then it is another 34% off, making it £3.60.

Regarding the 54%, no it won't be. 20% off on top of 34% off (or the other way round) gives you a grand total of

1 - (1 - 0.34) * (1 - 0.2) = 0.472

ie. 47.2% off the full-price fare.

Indeed you get some rather 'cheap' tickets if you put in railcards and it is not just restricted to one flow either, others such as Canterbury Stations - London Terminals also give a much bigger discount than 34% compared to the non-railcard fares.

Apologies i should of put the Off peak return with YP discount from RAI - DFD is £5.15 with the 20% off it goes down to £4.10.

So £4.10 is the lowest this fare will be.

How many times do you want to deduct the YP discount?;)
