Prepare for a significant step down from the 350s, just as the GA 720s were from the 360s. These will ride like a dinner tray on wheels, the chassis is very clunky and bumpy and wobbles a lot more on poor track. At least they will have 2+2 seating but I'd be seeking to avoid these when they enter service.

That the 720s are a significant step down from the 360s is your opinion, not fact. Mine strongly differs, particularly as while I found the 360 to ride better, I prefer many, many things about the 720s. Key, the 730s will largely replace 350/2s, which naturally aren’t popular due to the 3+2 seating layout, shorter (and less) carriages, and lack of tables. These issues you won’t find on a 730/1.

I passed LNWR Crewe on Tuesday and noted that 730021 and 730002 were still in the same place as two weeks before but had been joined by 730002 and 730016.

Is that via new Street, or the new route via Darlaston that's supposed to be coming when that station opens?
Technically not a new route as such. It used to be operated by Ryecroft allocated 2 car DMUs until Beeching cuts in 1964, but reinstated in the 1990s with 2nd gen DMUs. These eventually became a Wellington-Walsall service until culled again. This time however they are building new stations at Darlaston and Willenhall

So not much difference to a 350 then imo. I think they ride quite badly judging by my experience.
I may be slightly biased here, given I’m regularly subjected to the excellent WCML track quality, but I find the 350s perfectly fine ride-wise, it’s nowhere near as bad as some of the GWR 80X for example. However, I’m veering off topic.
