Advance on cancelled train - can I take the one before?

I regularly take advantage of Northern's cheap Advances for the days I need to commute into Leeds. I have received an email advising that the train I am booked on this coming Friday is cancelled, and that my ticket is valid on the next train. Fair enough.

However, am I also valid on the train before the one that is cancelled, thereby getting me to my destination ahead of time and not being delayed?

In this instance it doesn't make a big difference, but I would like to know where I stand. I certainly don't want to be excessed.

The NRCoT aren't as explicit about this as they should be, but in brief, every TOC that I'm aware of (including Northern) has a policy of simply allowing this by default. It's also permitted under the Advance ticket terms and conditions.

Doesn't this cover it?
8.4 If the train you purchased a ticket for is cancelled or is delayed and you still decide to travel, special arrangements will be made to accommodate you on another train (although a seat cannot be guaranteed).

Well it doesn’t specifically say you can go earlier, only “special arrangements will be made”

We've had this discussion on other threads recently, but condition 5.2 is the bit that I was thinking of. It doesn't spell it out as clearly as would be ideal, but I would be happy to rely on it.

As stated, this isn't really controversial in a practical sense - operators routinely tell people to get the previous or next train when one is cancelled.
