An update on WNXX yesterday of the Class 93s progress, 001 is at Worksop and available to the 'rail industry' for inspection, 002 is on test in Romania while 003 to 008 are either completed or being completed, it seems that there are rumours that potential users could include DRS and Trans Pennine, mind you there are potential rumours that my wife is getting one to do the shopping at Waitrose, we shall see with the passing of time
The TPE one has been a long standing rumour and gathered pace when it was announced the Trans Pennine route would be electrified.

So reading between the spin, there’s nothing signed up yet. If I was ROG I would be very, very concerned.

It does seem rather airy fairy but I guess Star Capital don't intend throwing their investors money into the four foot, to me it's only right that any ongoing negotiations are not in the public domain until contracts are ready to be signed, although someone will no doubt spill the beans on social media fairly soon

You’d have thought they would have contracts all-but-signed-up before placing an order with Stadler.

Presumably once they are accepted and are in numbers the plan could be to tender for the Caledonian Sleeper contract when it's up for renewal.

Looks likely 99s in pipeline for Caledonian Sleeper.

GBRf have just signed a 7-year contract to provide traction for the Caledonian Sleepers, so they'll have a bit of a wait.

Nonetheless, I agree we probably have to accept there isn't any obvious publicly visible work lined up for the 93s.
apart from moving EMUs around the country. The talk I heard explained that the practicalities of the current system (loco, fitted head of freight wagons, unbraked EMU plus the same in reverse order, and slow linespeed taking paths and massively heightened crew costs) means that there really are big savings to be made from a loco which can couple up, work the EMU brakes and go wherever it needs to go at linespeed. Was it in the Merseyrail stock thread that the formation and logistics of a recent move were described?
Even when the current deliveries are completed there will then be fleets going for overhaul.

Those savings are wiped out by the cost of using brand new locos.

Really? Even if your loco depreciation [edit: On your life-expired non EMU-compatible locos] is nil (with no enhanced maintainance cost either) I can't believe that all the shunting and slow speed running (and consequent crew costs) will outweigh the price of using the new locos. I would guess that slow-speed paths are charged at a premium rate on congested lines too.

Anyway, I wouldn't think many of our UK fleet replacements would have been justified on your criteria as we haven't had a step-change in service levels since the Pendolinos were introduced, so all could probably have been done with old locos!

I suppose we shall see which is the correct answer when the 93s are available for traffic.

Depreciation is not nil if ROG own the asset! How else do you think the capital cost is accounted for?

Sorry to bump this thread, can someone please remind me what the power output for each traction mode is... e.g. AC, battery and diesel?

And does the diesel work with the batteries or as a separate mode?

Try Wikipedia. It's all in the first paragraph!

ROG website says

Yet it cant use its own motive power to move this engine
The engine might not be cleared by the relevant people to be used on the mainline, even if dragged.
Knowing ROG if they could have moved it themselves I’m sure they would have.

Would a move to Loughborough Works be for some form of planned mod work as opposed to just storage would we suspect?

Who knows until it’s announced what it’s there for!
That’s could be its base for testing?
No one knows!

Exactly. AFAIK it hasn't raised it's pan on NR metals yet, although 93002 is rumoured to have been active in Romania.

Too much premature speculation in my view

Exactly!

Everyone has there own thoughts, opinions about why things are happening, thinking they know better than anyone else.

Until the operator in question announces there plans, we are are in the dark, and just need to wait.

People judging ROG should be aware it may not even be ROG involved with the plans for the loco at the moment, it could be the builder/financier who are In control of what is happening.

Jeez, I only asked a question. It appears the answer to my question was "we don't know" but thanks for taking so much of your time to go on the attack both

nor were the 700's but they were hauled through the tunnel

You'd have to ask Network Rail about that then, there are, obviously, different rules for different traction types, take Stadler 756s which are hauled via HS1 without barriers while Stadler 777s travel via the classic lines needing an array of barrier and brake force wagons

** Update 19th August **

Reported on WNXX that 93001 has been returned to Worksop from Loughborough by road
