Here’s a rather niche request.. can you buy or download to print off a map of all the heritage rail ways in the UK? My wife and I are slowly ticking them off, our little boy is only 10 months old but already been on 11 heritage railways… but we would like some kind of map where we can highlight the ones we have done and then also see at a glance others we can do when we go away. If it shows current National rail lines even better as we like to travel by rail when we are away if we can. (Plus we can tick off the national rail lines we have done too as a bonus)

Told you it was niche.

I don't know if this will suit you but there are (at least) two online maps.

Thanks for the reply, we had seen these, I use the heritage railway one a fair bit for research, the back up was printing one of these off.

Ohhh that’s ann
At Wirksworth station on the EVR, there's a poster that shows all preserved railways in the UK.
Ohh that’s annoying we have been there and I some how missed that! Will have to do another trip there at some point and have a look, thanks for the heads up

I started a custom Google map a few years ago intending to drop a pin on every heritage railway station in the UK but it was a huge task so I lost interest!

Someone made a really good map of the modern rail system that intergrates all the heritage railways into it regardless of them being mainline connected or not:).

A printable map would be a challenge as some lines are so short they wouldn't be visible at national scale. Assuming you would buffer the lines to make them pop on the map! They must all be in Open Street Map if somebody fancies the challenge.

In an old job I had to strip heritage railways and other oddities (including the long pulled up line to Loanhead) from a supposedly definitive spatial dataset of Scotland's railways I received from Transport Scotland. That long, straight pipeline 'railway' in the far north of Scotland was also in the data as well as a spur to Burghead that is long defunct. At a guess the classification data behind this set of polylines was too vague, with everything tagged 'railway' with no secondary or tertiary classification to further filter the data.

Out of curiosity (and maybe should be a separate thread), when was the last new preserved line / organisation established? A couple of decades ago there were new projects popping up all the time, from small scale station restorations with a museum and a short length of track to more ambitious proposals, and it would have been hard work keeping a map updated. I don’t really see these starting up anymore, what if anything has been established recently?

Probably the Gawr Valley or that power station one in north Wales which I cannot spell!

The Yorkshire Wolds Railway is fairly new but still a few years old.

I made one with most of the industrial heritage museums/sites that the UK has to offer. But I too got bored after a while.

Here's is a link if anyone wants to have a look.

You can save these maps and make them appear on the google maps app on your phone. I find it very handy if im looking for something to do nearby.
