Yep, last of the 165s to be done 165103 is destined for the West, so when it does get put through Wolverton it will be sent straight to SPM.

Once 165112 is refreshed, that’s when the first 166 will commence. (I believe the intention is to input the blue 166s first)

Is the intention to keep a downgraded first class area on 166s, or fully convert it to standard class to match the seats on rest of the train ?

I hope its kept as 2+2 be nice if that area and the same part on the other side we're 2+2 but who knows

It will be kept. As far as I know the DfT has not permitted any layout alterations.

Not the first unit to gain a 'disfigured forehead'. When Calder Valley DMU 51823 lost its headcode panel, it looked rather strange compared to the other Class 110s. https://www.railcar.co.uk/data/vehicle/51823

I was on 165101 Monday and sat in the first class section. There was no 1st class labels, the door was locked open. Other souls seemed reluctant to use it. The guard took my fare (2nd class) as there was a couple at Paignton ticket window asking about trains to Norwich on the strike days.
The train was busy. Lots of people getting on and off especially Dawlish Warren. These trains are suited for the Devon Metro. Today 4 166s and 1 165 today. That could be another record down here. There's been a couple of 2 car 165s and 158s this week. Okehampton has had a 3car 158 and 2 car 158 this week.

Waste of money, at 28 years of age they should be pensioned off and sent for recycling. I no longer use the train as the abysmal third-world conditions on the Portsmouth - Cardiff route just aren’t worth the money. I can’t see any reason to pay ridiculous amounts of money to be deafened, overheated, frozen (depending on the time of year), subjected to toxic fumes and the dubious sticky substances found in these rattling mobile Petri dishes.

My car is cheaper, quieter, climate-controlled, relaxing, hygienic and often quicker.

Unless the refurbishment includes a totally new interior, a completely new air-conditioning system, new tinted double-glazed sealed windows, a new exhaust system and some serious sound deadening, anything less is just squandering good money after bad.

They can be sent for recycling alright - just send to Northern in exchange for the class 150's and 158's, as to many Northerners they'd appear to be new units when in fact they're much older.

I really hope they go all out with the refurbishment here. As far as I know, the units are not planning to be retired anytime soon and they work on regional routes where passengers are likely to be making longer distance travel. They're really difficult to work or relax on as there are very few (and no fold down) tables to put your laptop or food and drink.

I'd be surprised if the air conditioning was sorted out as it wasn't on the Class 158s when they went in for their refresh, but the seats, the small toilets, blown glazing and many bodged repairs these units have need sorting out. GWR also seem to have stopped bothering to replace the spotlights in the standard part of the train that actually has tables, which leaves one of the nicer parts of the train feeling rather dingy.

As in another thread I suggested that a select number of class 165's could have been stripped down and the parts used to keep the class 166's going. Either way, they are requiring a heavy referb as the class 166's I travelled on in Devon last year appeared to be in better condition..

I haven't noticed myself.

The interior of the unrefurbished turbos tends to be very stuffy and the refurbs have done a world of good as far as my olfactory system is concerned; I'll have my nose peeled in the future though.

Yes - though I would have just thought of it as “newness” and don’t consider it particularly unpleasant. Better than “Odeur de voyageur” at any rate!

I think the OP is referring to a plan to put Networker coaches in the Turbo fleet which was dependant on a repower happening, and was discussed some time ago. Seems to have very much gone out of the plan.

Should do, I believe all the FGW Blue 166s should be emerging as Green ones.
