TfW 175 shortages

To be honest, I've lost track of the reformations. In which unit is 79759?

Come to that, can anyone provide a full list of the current class 175 formations?

this is the list i have, not sure if its still correct:

175004: 50759 & 79759 (both 175109)
175005: 50705 & 79751 (175101)
175006: 50706 & 79765 (175115)
175101: 50751, 56751 & 79704 (175004)
175109: 50704 (175004), 56759 & 79705 (175005)
175115: 50765, 56765, 79706 (175006)

all others being in their original formations

This empty 175 on the 1943 Cardiff Central to Llandudno Junction is immaculate, smooth, silent and so very comfortable. I’d take it over a 197 any day unfortunately - and over a MK4 I think, as they’re looking very shabby in both Virgin and Grand Central refurbished sets.

I’m so very sad that their time at TfW is coming to an end. They have been the flagship train of Wales - and indeed Wales’ only class that didn’t also work for an English TOC, though ironically being the only TfW class to be maintained at an English depot while the others were maintained in Wales - for many years before the new stock arrived.

I really must go for a long ride before they go, perhaps to Milford Haven as it’s only £30 or so return from Cardiff with railcard.

After travelling on both a 197 and 175 today I'm still more drawn to the 197 to be honest. Perhaps as its a shiny new train. But there isn't a lot in it. Its difficult to compare them like for like as they are quite different. But its been good to have more 175s running and it will be strange without them. I wish we knew when their last day of service would be.

Technically they were with First North West and then Transpennine Express before they came to ATW. Infact ATW loaned Transpennine Express some for a while. I remember getting a 175 to Blackpool around 2006. Once they stopped loaning them they appeared on almosr all South Wales to Manchesters. Before that it was a mix of 175 and 158 for a while.

Might be 175111, they do go there for maintenance now that Chester is more full, and that one has been OOU there as parts donor for a long while.

This is 175008 which is reformed with part of 175101. Both of which were the fire damaged carriages. It was roaded from Chester

This is 175111 which has been taken apart as a parts donor for several months. Talk is it will be put back to a suitable state in time for lease handback.

Why have 175’s gone off lease when nobody else is using them? Is it because TfW can't maintain them because Chester depot has gone over to 197’s?

CAF are unable to maintain both the 197 and 175's. There are about 30 197's with TFW now as well as more rapidly being delivered and put into service. At least when there will be 50+ maintained at Chester, it will be a single fleet.
Spare parts are also a struggle to get hold of which often the reason for slow repair. Supply chain will improve in time for the 175's to be with whichever new operator is taking them.

General talk is the 2 car have a new home, but nothing has been stated publicly by Angel Trains who that is. It's unlikely many people within TFW will know.

It’s riding very smoothly and quietly indeed, is moderately loaded but not uncomfortably so, and so I’m taking it for a goodbye jaunt to Milford Haven and back to Carmarthen Picnic and new read loaded

Guard on board (third staff member this week to say this TOC) confidently stated that Cardiff guards have been told Great Western Railway are snapping up the non-damaged 175s.

Which ones, if it is correct, 2 cars, 3cars, or the whole lot. If so, could mean extra for Bristol and full Hst Castle replacement to sort out.

I was definitely under the impression a few months ago they'd been declined by GWR, but I suppose it could have been wibble!

I don't think it'd be a bad decision though.

I suppose it could be they've realised without the short hst formations they'll be very short of stock. I wonder will they work cardiff pompey or cardiff penzance trains.

There don't seem to be as many 175s in service today however that's not entirely unusual for a Sunday.

The Cardiff-Portsmouths are generally booked for 4 or 5 car 158s now. Some Cardiff-West of England's are booked as 80x, on electric between Cardiff and Patchway.

Whilst the split is inconvenient for those of us who use Marches trains past Cardiff, there is little doubt many do use the trains to/from Cardiff. Would have just been better if the connections worked off the Mk4.

I hope that even the reduced numbers that are using the line since the reliability plummeted do not tempt anyone to diagram 2 car trains on the Marches long term. 175/1s were right for the line for many reasons and 175/0s were the thing we used to worry about turning up (Oh to have the 175/0 as the biggest concern)

The first time around they weren't great. I think the problem was with there only being 14 or so use was limited. They found a home on the Cotswolds though and I travelled on them daily for a few years before HST's wiped them out. Then when they came back the reliability was much better. GWR seem to look after stuff so hopefully they will be fine with 175's. They also should look nice in green.

That was a very last minute sub as the brakes wouldn’t release on HD06 on Crewe C.S in the morning for 5V31/1V31. Many unit step ups and a few delays later 150267 was all that was available.

Where would TfW be without the elderly 150s still plugging away, day in and day out, on services that their designers almost certainly never foresaw them operating? Not to mention them often running flat out to try to keep up with timetables designed for newer and faster trains.

Got 175114 between Crewe and Manchester this morning which will probably be the last one I get with TfW. 103 was going the other way on the 0930 ex Manchester.
