I did that once, after leaving the bank I checked the balance on my phone and it was there!I've found that it's now easier to deposit them than it used to be, funnily! I can go to my local branch and use my card in a machine, feed in the cheque, it detects the amount automatically and I get a photograph of the cheque printed on my receipt. Cheques can also be deposited using my mobile app wherever I go, so even more convenient!
I don't like these new(ish) machines to pay in cash, half the time it doesn't work especially if you are paying in like £300 - found out the notes have to be all the same way up. Luckily (or unluckily) I don't do this very often.
Going back on topic, I had a bounced cheque and the charge was £10. Think around 1995 - I had all my finances in order, I was caught out because of when they cashed it. I rung the bank up and spoke nicely rather than rant and rave and they waived the charge.
