Dallam schools this afternoon (regular allocations, but posted for the leyland lovers and because I never normally see them)
14199, 14252/3/6 All looking in good mechanical condition.

Nice to see that Kendal, Lancaster and Barrow are still Leyland Lovers!

I'm shocked about 34215 leaving Lillyhall! It only entered service here on 27th November 2010.

I'd love to see 40028 return to replace 34079, honestly.

34215 wasn't really in the fleet to begin with on paper, and because of its absence, had a feeling it was heading elsewhere because of this. But I would hope 47753/4 would join us as we've missed out on a few ex-Preston Bus Solo's passing our way!

The only manual gearbox wouldn't be ideal

Not Stagecoach, but Traveller's Choice (KendalKing, Gez and anyone else correct me if I'm wrong).
Looks like several vehicles are being prepped to leave the fleet, probably in part-ex for new stuff.
XDL 521 has reverted to X111 LGH and lost all decals
479 GTA reverted to PN03 UCJ and lost decals

Was one other, but now I can't remember what it was

For what though Gez? I haven't heard about them expanding particularly, and I can't see it being just for fleet renewal....

42672 would be handy for the 58. Even if 47022 is too wide for the 77/77A and was only deemed suitable as there were not any parked cars!

If we have a think about it, taking into account 34218 is now the only mini dart left in Service at Lillyhall, (After 34215 and 34079 were withdrawn today) Lillyhall don't really need a Merc on 58, Because we have 2 spare solos (1 for 56/57/57A, 1 for 58) 58 might as well be low floor. Sorry if I can't explain it cleaner.

Short X5 starts on my birthday, so if thats going to be Low floor operated, then we're gonna struggle following todays news about 34215 getting withdrawn.

Worth taking into account that "reserve" does not mean withdrawn. 33161/2 were constantly in "reserve" at Carisle but continued in use. If 34079 can be put back on the road I would arrange it will be!

Problem is, for cockermouth>tallentire allocation of 58, solos are a swine to turn around. The varios aren't much narrower or shorter, whereas the trusty old 709d fit like a glove!

Ill be honest, and go out on a limb, 40028 is roughly 16 year old, has had one hell of a tough life, and is probably in better nick mechanically than any of lillyhalls pre-08 solos! How many of lillyhalls "modern" buses will still be service capable at that age! The other active 709 only got killed last year due to a fitter re assembling the engine incorrectly - 40013 - but I know its days were numbered anyway. My point is, they were about the most durable, easy to fix, underrated machines stagecoach ever used! Not bad for a breadvan!

That concludes my uligy (if that's how you spell it!) to the faithful Mercedes 709d Alexander Sprint!

40028 would be more entertaining for us as passengers (and enthusiasts), but I'd imagine quite a few drivers wouldn't see it that way! I can remember my last ever ride on it! Vrooooooooom *CRUNCH* Vroooooooooom *CRUNCH* Vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom *CRUNCH* you get the idea

True. But my ultimate point, is this - at 16 years old, most of the current "newer" fleet will have been baked bean tins for quite some time!

I remember how rattly and rattly they were and how hard the suspension was (plus passenger comfort was... iffy) when turning off at the Travellers Rest and going along Ashfield Road on the old Moorclose route
Couldn't imagine 47005 lasting as long...

Personally, I'm surprised 709Ds lasted so long. Like most stuff of their time, gearboxes went before engines.

Now some musing out loud; Wales in July....hmmm....some festival or other?
